Section Engineer / Senior Engineer Location: Devonport Docks, Plymouth Start Date: Approximately two weeks from now Duration: ~2 years (freelance, Outside IR35 About the Project Join a high-profile marine infrastructure upgrade at the historic Devonport Docks. This large-scale assignment involves extensive structural and deep-foundation works to support enhanced quay operations, upgraded berthing facilities, and heavy-lift integration. You’ll work alongside seasoned civil and marine engineers, ensuring that safety, quality, and MOD standards are upheld throughout. Key Responsibilities * Lead the engineering section for structural and deep-foundation upgrades at Devonport Docks. * Checking As Builts and Supervising setting out engineers * Coordinate with site teams, subcontractors, and marine specialists to verify design compliance and construction sequencing. * Oversee lifting operations: certify lifting equipment, and ensure all Health & Safety protocols are followed. * Maintain daily progress reports, issue technical clarifications, and liaise with the MOD project liaison for security-sensitive activities. * Mentor junior engineers and ensure adherence to QA/QC procedures on site. Essential Requirements * MOD Clearance: Candidate must either hold existing UK Ministry of Defence clearance or be eligible to obtain it (minimum of 10 years’ continuous UK residency/work history required to successfully secure clearance). * Marine & Civil Engineering Experience: At least 10 years’ relevant experience in marine or port infrastructure projects, with proven expertise in structural foundations, retaining walls, and deep-piling schemes. * Lifting Experience: Demonstrable track record overseeing heavy-lift installations (cranes, jacking systems, lifting frames) on marine structures. * Qualifications: Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, with chartership (CEng/MICE/MCIHT) or working toward chartership strongly preferred. * Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings (AutoCAD/Revit), familiarity with Eurocodes/British Standards, and hands-on site engineering abilities. Desirable Attributes * Previous experience working on MOD or Royal Navy facilities. * Solid understanding of port logistics, berth dredging, or quay wall construction. * Strong stakeholder management: concise reporting to MOD authorities, local harbour stakeholders, and project management teams. * Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, especially in a security-sensitive environment.
