Principal Engineer - Battery Performance
Location: Oxfordshire
Department: Battery Systems
Reports to: Manager - Battery Performance
Are you ready to play a key role in shaping the future of electrification?
A major decarbonisation business is seeking a Principal Engineer - Battery Performance to join its growing Battery Systems team. Working at the forefront of electrification across energy, transport, and heavy industry, this role offers the chance to drive innovation in battery performance in a fast-paced, mission-led environment.
The Team:
You'll be joining a collaborative group of Battery Engineers responsible for:
1. Cell technology research
2. Battery data analysis
3. Battery modelling (pack and cell)
4. Battery cell safety
Your background may focus on one or more of these core areas - we're open to different specialisms within the battery performance domain.
What you'll be doing:
5. Lead efforts to improve electrical, thermal, and electrochemical battery performance and ensure safety compliance.
6. Develop battery system concepts from system-level requirements - including cell selection and pack sizing.
7. Create and implement detailed test plans and validation procedures.
8. Analyse data from lab testing, race events, and field trials.
9. Use simulation tools to predict system performance and assess safety strategies.
10. Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and lead technical discussions across departments.
11. Represent the battery performance function internally and externally - including customer meetings, academic partnerships, and industry events.
What you'll bring:
12. A degree in a STEM subject or equivalent experience in battery systems development.
13. Expertise in at least one of the following: battery modelling, data analysis (MATLAB), cell technology, or battery safety.
14. Strong understanding of high-voltage battery architecture and pack-level performance.
15. Experience contributing to battery system design and validation in real-world programmes.
16. Confident communicator with excellent teamwork and problem-solving skills.
