Service Care Legal is currently recruiting on behalf of a local authority in the East Sussex region, seeking a Regulatory Lawyer to join their team on a contract basis. This contract is expected to last approximately 22 months.

Licensing and Regulatory Lawyer
Location:
Hybrid – East Sussex
Hours:
4-day week (30 hours)
Contract:
Initial 12 weeks, with a likely extension up to 1 year and 10 months
Role Overview:
Support the Head of Legal Services in delivering high-quality legal services, focusing on licensing, regulatory, and enforcement matters.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Represent the council in criminal and civil litigation, including tenancy fraud, housing enforcement, and unauthorised encampments.
2. Provide legal advice on licensing (taxis, street trading, gambling, sex establishments) and act as legal advisor to Licensing Committees.
3. Handle appeals and advocacy in Magistrates’ Court and First Tier Tribunal.
4. Advise on environmental health, animal welfare licensing, and coroner’s hearings.
5. Deliver clear legal advice to officers and members, participate in projects and committees, and manage external legal providers.
Requirements:
1. Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive.
2. Experience in litigation, licensing, and regulatory law.
3. Strong advocacy and communication skills.
4. Public sector experience is desirable.
Working Pattern:
1. Hybrid work model.
2. Court attendance approximately 2 times per month.
3. Licensing Committee meetings approximately 2 times per month (evenings).
