John Sisk & Son have an opportunity for a Senior Design Manager or a experienced Design Manager ready to advance to a Senior Design Manager role. This position is based at our York Central project within our civil engineering division, Sisk Infrastructure.
As a Senior Design Manager, you will lead the delivery of effective design across multiple projects or a large-scale project. Your responsibilities include overseeing pre-construction and construction design processes, liaising with clients, vendors, the design team, in-house bid team, operations, and digital functions within John Sisk & Son. You will ensure compliance with industry standards, focusing on facilities, equipment, and processes within the life sciences & technology sector. The role requires client-facing engagement and broader stakeholder involvement.
Travel within the regional area is expected, including work at co-locations (site, office, clients’ offices).
Key Responsibilities:
1. Understand contractual procurement routes and administration, including Design & Build (D&B), EPCM, EPC, JCT, and NEC contracts.
2. Have a strong grasp of life science technologies, processes, equipment, instrumentation, vendor engagement, and workflows.
3. Be familiar with design stage plans aligned with client design and procurement phases, such as RIBA, FEL, AEC.
4. Work closely with scientists, engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
5. Identify and resolve design and technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
6. Seek opportunities for process and operational improvements.
7. Manage and mentor design teams, ensuring they have the necessary skills and resources.
8. Lead pre-construction briefing and design processes.
9. Coordinate design management procedures, linking commercial, construction, digital, and design teams.
10. Implement collaborative processes for design interrogation and review.
11. Manage the production, control, and distribution of design information at various stages.
12. Report on design progress regularly.
13. Review design information for buildability, safety, maintainability, compliance, and technical adequacy.
14. Promote innovation in design management, methodology, and practices.
15. Support the company's vision and values in all design activities.
16. Focus on Design for Manufacture and Assembly, solutions optioneering.
17. Manage consultancies and oversee information and change control.
18. Ensure design compliance with client and legislative requirements.
19. Mentor junior design managers and coordinators.
Candidate Profile:
* Diploma/degree qualified with at least 10 years of experience.
* Deep knowledge of LST procurement routes, contracts, and design workflows within the sector.
* Strong bias towards architectural CSA or engineering MEP background, with understanding of the other.
* Support pre-construction and construction processes, leading innovative design solutions.
* Liaise between clients, design consultants, project staff, and site management.
* Degree in construction-related discipline.
* Minimum six years’ experience in the construction industry.
