Overview
Principal Scientist - Underwater Acoustics at National Physical Laboratory (NPL).
The role involves leading a team within the Underwater Acoustics area, setting strategic direction, driving research, and expanding capabilities through collaboration with internal and external partners. You will shape the technical agenda, develop novel measurement tools, and engage with national and international stakeholders, including standards bodies, academia, government, and industry.
Responsibilities
* Lead, design, and execute experimental and theoretical research, including development of novel measurement tools and methods for current and future underwater acoustic applications.
* Create and implement a vision for underwater acoustics within the Ultrasound & Underwater Acoustics Group, addressing UK government challenges.
* Represent NPL on national and international standards committees and at international meetings.
* Lead engagement with UK and overseas organisations (other National Metrology Institutes, UK Government, academia, and commercial customers) to maintain NPL’s leadership in underwater acoustics.
* Respond to commercial and grant-based ITTs and secure research funding aligned with NPL priorities.
* Consult with internal and external stakeholders to improve methods and tools for underwater acoustics and develop tools for future traceability.
* Collaborate with other NPL departments to develop new opportunities and partnerships; manage science portfolio, project proposals, milestones, budgets, and partnerships.
* Establish formal collaborations with industry partners to create high-impact research programs and transfer successes to industry.
The position is based at NPL's Teddington site with occasional travel including customer site visits and representation at national and international meetings, conferences, and events.
About You
* internationally respected expert in underwater acoustics with proven experience leading and conducting international research, with publications in recognised journals.
* Experience leading national and international standards development or contributing to underwater acoustics standards.
* Track record developing and implementing technical solutions in underwater acoustics funded by civil and/or defence sectors.
* Experience presenting results in reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
* Experience developing and executing business strategy for technical initiatives and managing full lifecycle of large-scale research programs.
* Demonstrable experience leading and motivating scientific and technical staff.
