Consultant in Acute Medicine – University Hospital Wishaw

We are looking to welcome a new Consultant colleague to join a dedicated and forward-thinking Acute Medicine team within NHS Lanarkshire. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and supportive department focused on delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care for patients with acute medical presentations.

University Hospital Wishaw is a busy district general hospital and part of the Lanarkshire Acute Division, providing a wide range of inpatient and specialist services. The Acute Medicine unit manages a high turnover of both planned and unscheduled admissions, supported by a multidisciplinary team including specialty and core trainees, advanced nurse practitioners, and physiotherapists.

We offer a flexible, sustainable working pattern with annualised sessions and strong support for SPA activity in education, quality improvement, and research. The post is full-time (10 PAs) but applicants seeking less than full-time will be considered.

Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non-DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well-developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an Appraiser, etc. Applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to any of the above or other areas and wishing to commence on more than 1 PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager (provide contacts) who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.

The University of Glasgow enjoys close links with NHS Lanarkshire, and our medical students benefit greatly from the excellent educational opportunities provided by the board in both primary and secondary care. Those who are or who will be involved in teaching our students, or in any other activity which involves a contribution to teaching, research or scholarship within the University are eligible for honorary status at the University of Glasgow.

Honorary Status Role Holders are entitled to numerous benefits including a University of Glasgow ID card, use of the Library and other facilities, and a University IT account as required for their role. They have access to all courses run by the IT Services on the same basis as members of staff and are also permitted an educational discount when PC equipment is purchased through the IT Services.

Applicants should hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise and be on, or within six months of, the Specialist Register for Acute or General (Internal) Medicine.

Informal enquiries are welcomed by Dr Colin Stewart, Clinical Director via email colin.stewart@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

For any application queries, please email Medical.dentalconsultant@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Interview date: 30th March 2026
