Member of the RCVS Riding Establishments Subcommittee: role description Background The Riding Establishments Subcommittee (RESC) is responsible for overseeing entry to and the continued inclusion of riding establishment inspectors on the Riding Establishment Inspector List (the Inspectorate) held by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). The RESC reports to the RCVS Standards Committee. Its oversight of the inspectorate includes the following: Delivering annual training to new applicants as well as existing inspectors who are required to refresh their training every five years. Providing detailed guidelines, template forms, and advice to inspectors, local authorities, riding establishments, and other interested parties. Publishing the Riding Establishment Inspector Newsletter (REIN) every year around springtime. Conducting yearly audits of inspections and providing feedback via REIN to ensure a consistent and high standard of inspections throughout the Inspectorate. We are seeking to appoint an additional member to the RESC. Membership of the RESC will provide an opportunity for an experienced riding establishment inspector to make an important contribution to ensuring, as far as possible, a competent and uniform inspection process applicable to all riding establishments in England, Wales, and Scotland. Time commitments RESC members spend on average around 10 hours a month on RESC work, including assisting with queries, planning for the yearly Training and Induction Course, facilitating Annual Q&As and providing input into RESC guidelines and template forms, as well as the provision of advice on statutory guidelines. Membership also includes, in addition to the above, between three and six days a year attending meetings, participating in member-training, and presenting at the Training and Induction Course. Appointment to the role is for an initial term of three years. An offer to renew for another three year term may be offered at the end of the initial term, at the discretion of the RCVS. Compensation RESC members can claim a loss of earnings allowance which changes each year. The current day rate is £366. Reasonable subsistence and travel expenses will also be reimbursed. Specific tasks The RESC carry out the following tasks: Developing and producing webinars for the Training and Induction Course to be hosted on RCVS Academy. Developing and delivering presentations at the in-person element of the Training and Induction Course. Facilitating Course and Annual Q&A sessions. Contributing to RESC webpage content and the drafting of template forms and guidelines. Writing articles for the Riding Establishment Inspector Newsletter (REIN). Providing subject-matter expertise to inform: Responses to advice from other inspectors, local authorities, riding establishments, and other stakeholders. Individual and general audit feedback. Contributions to regulatory reform. Criteria for the role The applicant should meet the following criteria: Registered with the RCVS as “UK practising”. Have been on the Inspectorate for at least a year and has carried out a reasonable amount of inspections. Has experience of the Riding Establishments Acts 1964 as amended by the Riding Establishments Act 1970 (Scotland and Wales) – this is desirable only. Is a team player. Understands the vision and need for the RESC; and Is confident in presenting to others.
