Southern Water treats and recycles 718 million litres of wastewater daily from nearly two million homes at 368 Wastewater Treatment Works. The role of the Process Scientist is to review and anticipate compliance risks, protect the environment, and drive capital expenditure at the Wastewater Treatment Works.

This role requires providing technical support on wastewater, sludge treatment, waste management, and R&D. Responsibilities include optimizing chemicals, power, and manpower while ensuring compliance. You will be a technical expert driving wastewater compliance, investigating pollution incidents, and collaborating with operators and managers to prevent pollution.

Your key accountabilities include:

1. Providing technical advice on wastewater treatment processes, including setting operational plans, monitoring compliance, and advising on corrective actions.
2. Conducting pollution investigations, informing stakeholders, and liaising with the Environment Agency.
3. Reviewing data and wastewater trends to identify process issues and pre-empt breaches, highlighting early warning signs.
4. Investigating breaches with root cause analysis, preparing reports, and following up on scientific actions.
5. Identifying capital investment needs to maintain compliance and attending HAZOP and ALM meetings for capital schemes.
6. Providing technical and procedural support to contractors during capital or remedial works, ensuring ongoing compliance.

Successful candidates will possess technical knowledge in wastewater, sludge, R&D, or waste management, with skills in scientific testing and specialist equipment. Familiarity with company information systems (e.g., Pi Process Book) and understanding of relevant legislation and regulations are required.

Good communication skills are essential for translating technical info for operators and influencing others. An inquisitive mindset will help identify compliance and pollution risks through monitoring and investigations.

This role requires participation in a standby rota.
