Our client is seeking a Principal Primary Design Engineer to lead their Primary Design team and support delivery of complex energy projects across generation, transmission, distribution, storage, and end-use sectors.
This is to lead the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects within the SSE portfolio. This role is critical to ensuring that all primary design outputs meet SSE's technical standards, safety requirements, and project delivery expectations.
The role involves technical leadership, team management, and delivery of substation primary plant and cable design projects that contribute to the UK's Net Zero targets. Travel to offices, sites, and client locations across the UK will be required.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and mentor a team of engineers, acting as technical authority and supporting client engagement.
Deliver high-voltage substation primary plant and cable designs (up to 400kV) in line with client, DNO, and National Grid standards.
Produce and review layouts, plant specifications, short-circuit and cable calculations, earthing requirements, and ancillary equipment specifications.
Undertake site surveys and resolve constructability issues.
Ensure compliance with SHEQ, CDM2015, and industry standards.
Manage project budgets, risks, and design liabilities, delivering to time, cost, and quality.
Write technical reports, proposals, and design documentation (DID, PEP, BEP).
Drive innovation and identify new business opportunities during project delivery.
Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
Chartered Engineer (or working towards).
Around 10 years' relevant industry experience.
Strong project and budget management skills, with knowledge of NEC and design/construction contracts.
Proficiency in CAD/3D CAD.
CSCS/SHEA Power Card and full UK driving licence.
