Lead Software Engineer | On-Site (4-5 days per week) | Glasgow
Ready to spearhead software delivery for a product that’s redefining how the human body is measured and optimised? We’re partnering with a mission-driven, VC-backed startup building wearables that are already being used by elite athletes. Following a fresh funding round, they’re expanding their engineering leadership. They have a clear runway and growth path, and the product vision that reaches far beyond sport into clinical health and rehabilitation.
As Lead Engineer, you’ll sit at the heart of a cross-disciplinary R&D hub as a hands-on engineering leader. In this varied role, you’ll drive delivery across mobile, embedded and cloud stacks while shaping where they go next. We don’t expect you to be an expert in all tech and tools used, but you’ll be solving challenges around everything from Bluetooth to React Native and data pipelines to firmware.
The purpose of this role is to:
* Own the software delivery, architecting resilient, scalable solutions for worldwide deployment.
* Lead sprint planning, backlog prioritisation and cross-functional collaboration across hardware, firmware and product teams.
* Mentor a growing squad of engineers, instilling best-in-class standards for testing, security and code quality.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Architecting and delivering end-to-end solutions across mobile, embedded and cloud, turning Bluetooth-enabled wearables into actionable data.
* Leading an Agile team, setting sprint cadence, making trade-offs, and lifting engineering standards without sacrificing velocity.
* Mentoring and empowering other engineers; coaching rather than controlling, cultivating a culture where quality code and continuous learning coexist.
* Working with hardware and scientific specialists to build, iterate and test a world-class product.
* Championing security and data privacy so sensitive performance metrics remain protected from sensor to cloud.
What you’ll bring
* Hands-on experience delivering mobile applications and working with IoT or Bluetooth-connected devices. You could have done these separately or together.
* Proven experience setting up and maintaining robust software architecture.
* Ability to lead sprint planning, backlog management, and manage trade-offs between speed and scalability. If you only have light experience in this area or are stepping up, that’s fine.
* You should have some competence in React Native and embedded C or a comparable language. Overall, we are more interested in your approach to technology and ability to pick things up than the specific tech stack you’ve worked with. However, you should be able to work across both app development and ideally do some light embedded work (e.g. basic firmware edits, BLE tweaks).
* Experience supporting or mentoring junior engineers is essential. We are looking for the ability to guide delivery without micro-managing and evidence of upholding clear technical standards across a team.
* Understanding of data privacy and security is required. If you’ve worked on a product where this was important, that is great, please highlight this.
The package
* To £80k base (DOE) + employee stock options—own a slice of the upside.
* 28 days’ holiday + public holidays.
* Pension.
Location
This role is on-site in Central Glasgow (4+ days/week). Innovation happens the fastest when we collaborate in person due to the physical nature of the product. You’ll test prototypes, iterate with hardware teams and see instant results.
