Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia
Consultant role based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff, with additional coverage at University Hospital Llandough. This post is split between Critical Care (8 sessions) and Anaesthesia (2 sessions) – total 10 sessions per week, including a 24/7 resident critical care consultant rota covering UHW and UHL.
Job Summary
Provide expert clinical care, supervision and leadership in intensive care medicine and anaesthesia. Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, support junior staff, and contribute to continuous improvement of service quality.
Responsibilities
* Deliver a comprehensive service in intensive care and anaesthesia, ensuring high standards of patient prevention, diagnosis, treatment and health promotion.
* Continue responsibility for patients in charge, liaising with colleagues and ensuring proper departmental functioning in line with policy and strategic plans.
* Supervise and manage junior medical/dental staff, overseeing training and providing career advice.
* Participate in continuing medical education and support staff development in line with UHB policy.
* Contribute to clinical audit and governance, supporting healthcare quality improvement initiatives.
* Engage in 24/7 critical care coverage, including inter-hospital transfers and complex specialty cases.
Qualifications
* Full GMC/GDC registration with licence to practise.
* On Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia (or CCT/CESR due within 6 months of interview).
* Postgraduate ICM qualification (e.g. FICM, DICM, EDIC or equivalent).
* Postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesia (e.g. FRCA).
* Desirable: Echocardiography qualifications (FICE, BSE accreditation) and ultrasound competency (CUSIC).
Experience
* Broad experience in adult critical care and specialty areas (neurosurgery, trauma).
* Familiarity with inter‑hospital transfer of critically ill patients.
* Proficiency with ultrasound and/or echocardiography.
* Extensive training and experience in anaesthesia.
* Desirable: Experience with regional anaesthesia.
Skills

Clinical Governance
* Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding of audit’s role in improving practice.
* Knowledge of clinical risk management and governance.

* Active research interests and abilities to critically appraise literature.
* Commitment to support the directorate’s research strategy.
Teaching
* Demonstrated experience teaching medical/dental students and junior doctors/dentists.
Management
* Commitment to participation in and understanding of management processes.
* Evidence of effective leadership skills.
