Role and responsibilities:

Purpose of the job: Work directly with young people, helping them to build life skills, develop healthy relationships and make decisions that are right for them. Mentors are often involved in supporting and setting up projects. To ensure safeguarding and support of students. To communicate with families including parents, guardians and carers as required

Mentor specialism:

* An ability to inspire Oarsome Chance young people by developing sessions that can relate to and build on their musical preferences, which include many different genres including grime, R&B, rock, punk and others.
* Experience of using music production technology and DAW software and hardware systems to facilitate music creation with young people.
* Experience of teaching young people to play an instrument, particularly guitar, drums and/or piano would be desirable.

Typical responsibilities include:

Support the operational team in the delivery of young people sessions. Lead sessions where appropriate ensuring correct staff ratios for all groups during the day. Working with students, parents, carers and commissioners ensure good lines of communication throughout. Assist the wider Operational team in all safeguarding of students during workshop and classroom activities

● Setting up and running projects within a framework

● Mentoring vulnerable young people

● Maintaining confidential records

● Writing and presenting reports

● Facilitating workshops and community events

● Working with other organisations, such as schools, community groups and police

● Transport lead and support where applicable

Key skills:

● Organisational skills

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills

● The ability to encourage and inspire others

● Professional approach and Reliability

● The ability to keep up to date with the law and how it affects young people

● Basic IT skills and record keeping

● Enhanced DBS check required before start

● Full driving licence (not essential but preferred)

● Assist the Operational team in all safe management of all outdoor activities.

● To help manage all risk associated within the role and report any concerns immediately to Line manager, CEO and/or OC Board of Trustees.

● To work with students 1:1 and leading groups at Oarsome Chance (OC) on classroom, workshop, and outdoor activities

● Supporting students with managing low level mental health and offering strategies to support them

● To help OC students to achieve safe and constructive engagement.

● To promote a student-centred approach.

● To have read and understand all relevant OC risk assessments and help update them, as necessary.

● To assist the Operational team to mitigate all risk associated within the workshops and all organised outdoor activity.

● To adhere to all OC policies and procedures.

● To assist with Multi agency working around therapeutic and other interventions when required.

● To assist the Operational team with site visits for new students, parents and carers including assessment of suitability. For OC programmes including any safeguarding risks or concerns.

● To promote inclusion and diversity

● To ensure confidentiality and safe storage of information and GDPR.

Qualifications and education requirements

Desirable but not essential as training will be given:

● Annual safeguarding for school staff KCSIE 2021

● Conflict de-escalation in a school setting

● MIDAS minibus driver's accreditation

● Safeguarding and protecting children L1

● Foundation and Safety, Rescue Training (FSRT)

● RYA (or equivalent) first aid training

● Mental Health first aider

● Willing to undertake further training and updates

Schedule:

* 8 hour shift

This is a full-time role, based at Fort Widley. However, we are open to considering applicants who wish to work on a term-time or part-time basis.
