Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency This role offers an exciting opportunity to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team and provide technical leadership across the organisation. Your focus will be on delivering safe, reliable and sustainable electrical assets while supporting the Agency’s net zero commitments.
Responsibilities
* Lead the development, maintenance and dissemination of electrical engineering standards, including HV and LV power systems and control systems across assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.
* Provide technical engineering leadership across the organisation as part of the Technical Authority, supporting safe and reliable asset delivery.
* Deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees working with electrical systems and equipment.
* Hold a national incident response role, including out‑of‑hours duties when required.
* Support the development of risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work for electrical projects.
Qualifications
* Knowledge of electricity regulations – expertise in the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Control systems expertise – application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489 and experience with telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Experience with high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Strong risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance, including FMEA and reliability systems.
* Proven ability to test, isolate and prove high and low voltage electrical systems.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.
Professional and Practical Requirements
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration within 12 months.
* UK driving licence.
Other Information
Hybrid role with a base location near your home; some travel and overnight stay may be required. Incident management is part of the development plan and training will be provided.
