Sen tutor

Offer description

About the role

We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and engaging 1:1 SEN Tutor to support a young person in their home environment on an outreach basis. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a learner’s educational journey while supporting their transition into adulthood and employment.

Location: Hornchurch (home-based)
Role Type: Part-time / Flexible hours (to be agreed)
Start Date: ASAP

About the Role

You will deliver tailored, one-to-one educational and pastoral support within the student’s home setting. The role will focus on building engagement, supporting independence, and reinforcing key academic and life skills in line with the learner’s needs and future goals.

You will work closely with the family and wider professionals to ensure a consistent, supportive approach that promotes confidence, wellbeing, and progression.

Student Profile (BP)

1. A bright and determined young person with a good sense of humour
2. Diagnosed with multiple needs, including ASD
3. Has physical limitations and relies on parental support for certain medical needs
4. Experiences high anxiety, particularly around self-image and how others perceive him
5. Hardworking and motivated, with an existing college-based work placement
6. Preparing to transition into employment in the summer

Interests include:

7. Gaming and PlayStation
8. NBA and sports
9. IT development and coding
10. Spending time with family, friends, and his dog

The family has highlighted that engagement may be a challenge due to a change in support staff. A tutor or LSA who can build rapport—potentially through shared interests such as World War II—would be particularly beneficial in supporting a positive transition.

Key Responsibilities

11. Deliver personalised tutoring sessions aligned with the student’s EHCP and targets
12. Build a strong, trusting relationship to support engagement and confidence
13. Adapt teaching strategies to meet SEN needs, including ASD and anxiety
14. Support preparation for adulthood and employment skills
15. Liaise with parents/carers and professionals to ensure consistency
16. Provide regular feedback and progress updates

Requirements

17. Experience working with SEN students, particularly ASD
18. Patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach
19. Ability to engage learners with varied interests and needs
20. Confidence working in a home-based setting
21. Interest in IT, gaming, or World War II (desirable, not essential)
22. Relevant qualifications (teaching, tutoring, or SEN support) preferred
