Consultant Ophthalmologist - Paediatrics and Strabismus
The Consultant post is comprised of 9 programmed activities (PAs), of which 5.5 are direct clinical care (DCC) activities and 3.5 support professional activities (SPAs) and clinic‑related admin. The post holder will attend fortnightly meetings of the Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) MDT and deliver ROP screening and treatment as part of the paediatric and strabismus sessions at Moorfields Eye Hospital (MEH) City Road and Homerton Hospital.
Main duties
* Maintain GMC specialist registration and licence to practice.
* Develop and maintain competencies required for paediatric and strabismus ophthalmology.
* Deliver high‑quality care to patients and involve them in decisions about their care.
* Attend and lead weekly paediatric service teaching and monthly strabismus service teaching, and participate in the joint MEH/GOSH paediatric consultant on‑call rota.
Performance Management
* Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to achieve clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management and operational effectiveness.
* Meet agreed indicators for timeliness, infection control, re‑attendance rates and drug budget targets.
Research, Teaching & Audit
* Comply with Moorfields policies on research governance and obtain approvals from the Trust and appropriate ethics committees.
* Contribute to research, development, teaching and audit within the service.
* Participate in CME and CPD activities; part‑time medical education degree courses and higher‑degree studies are encouraged.
* Take advantage of at least two weeks paid study leave with expenses each year.
Professional Duties
* Adhere to Health & Safety regulations, the Trust’s Information Governance Policy, the DBS and safeguarding policies, and the Trust’s infection control procedures.
* Maintain clean, decontaminated equipment for patients in line with infection control protocols.
* Enhance the NHS information governance toolkit compliance.
* Provide other duties as designated by management.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* FRCOphth or equivalent.
* CCT or equivalent training.
* Full GMC registration and eligibility for the GMC specialist register.
* Higher degree.
Training and Knowledge
* Completed higher specialist training in ophthalmology.
* Clinical fellowship in strabismus and paediatric ophthalmology with extended experience in strabismus surgery.
* Competence in the surgical management of strabismus.
* Formal teaching experience.
Skills and Abilities
* High clinical and surgical skill in strabismus and paediatric ophthalmology.
* Experience leading quality improvement initiatives.
* Excellent teaching and presentation skills.
Experience
* Extensive management of patients with strabismus and related pathology.
* Extensive management of paediatric ophthalmology and ocular pathology in children.
* Experience providing ROP treatment.
Personal Qualities
* Team‑building and coordination skills.
* Ability to organise and manage a busy clinical service.
