Job Overview

The post is based at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital (WMH) site which is a strategically important hospital within North Wales. We partner with Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan and Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor as well as associated Community Hospitals, Minor Injury/Illness Units, and Primary Care Services. WMH is part of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB). This is a fully integrated organisation and one of the largest healthcare providers in the UK.

Emergency Medicine at WMH has undergone a radical transformation towards a modern and rapidly evolving service that is ambitious to see the highest standards of emergency care for its population. We are looking for a Consultant who has the vision, ambition and drive to work alongside the existing team to progress the department.

The department is keen to support Consultants who may have a special interest and BCUHB would consider negotiated job plans to facilitate such interests. If there are any specific areas the potential candidate wishes to explore these can be facilitated. Suitably motivated individuals may also be able to forge exciting links in several innovative areas, for example sports medicine.


Main duties of the job

* Provide a high-quality service to the local population, including an emergency on‑call commitment.
* Be on call once per week during Monday to Friday; current expected on‑call rota is 1:6 for weekends.
* Assist nominated consultants in the supervision and teaching of junior trainees.
* Contribute to local clinical governance activities including clinical audit and clinical risk initiatives.
* Co‑operate with local management in the efficient running of services and share with all colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
* Contribute to quality improvement work in the ED and support projects to ensure they are sustainable and successful.
* Familiarise with modern models of Emergency Care to support the department in its goals of improving performance and patient safety.
* Contribute to liaison work with key clinical specialties to build and strengthen relationships.

Qualifications

* Full GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview.
* Current ALS / ATLS / EPLS provider or equivalent.


Desirable criteria

* Current Advanced Life Support Instructor.


Experience


Essential criteria

* Evidence of an ability to develop effective working relationships, on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
* Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve a service.
* Values partnerships with other agencies.
* Evidence of teaching and training of post/undergraduate clinical staff / educational supervision of junior doctors.
* Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing audit and quality improvement.


Skills & Abilities


Essential criteria

* Effective leadership; ability to take responsibility and demonstrate leadership when appropriate.
* Understands the importance of effective team working with all levels of staff, take time to listen, understand and involve people; receptive to appropriate change.
* Understands and can apply the principles of Prudent Healthcare.
* Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with patients, colleagues, relatives and staff; communicate openly and honestly and explain things clearly.
* Understands information systems and technology.
* All clinical skills in keeping with current RCEM curriculum.


Desirable criteria

* Demonstrates learning in Improvement science and methodology, ability and drive to use information and experience to improve the service.
* Strong interest in point‑of‑care emergency ultrasound.
* Sub‑speciality interest for example paediatrics, critical care, pre‑hospital, sports medicine.
* Interest in medical education.
* Demonstrates an interest in emergency medicine academic advancement and research with evidence of recent publication.
