As a Software Engineer, you'll be a vital member of one of our agile Digital Squads-small, cross-functional teams aligned to specific areas of the business. In this role, you'll be instrumental in the evolution of our LIMS, a key system that supports water quality analysis, sample tracking, and regulatory compliance across our laboratory operations. Our squads follow Agile Scrum and DevOps principles and work closely with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, UX/UI Designers, User Researchers, and other engineers. Collaboration is key, and you'll also partner with key teams like Architecture, Security, and Service Operations to ensure what we build is secure, reliable, and aligned with organisational standards. Our goal? To deliver a robust, user-led LIMS that supports lab efficiency and data accuracy at scale. What You'll Be Doing As a hands-on, agile Software Engineer, you'll be responsible for delivering, maintaining, and evolving our Laboratory Information Management System. This includes everything from design and estimation to coding, cloud infrastructure management, and supporting the LIMS in production. While you'll typically work within your squad, there will be opportunities to lead on specific technical components of the LIMS and to enhance your personal skills and domain knowledge. Day to day, you'll: Manage your own workload using Kanban boards, staying focused and self-motivated Collaborate closely with your team to align on goals and priorities Contribute to retrospectives and help improve how we work, from tools to processes Advise and support Product Owners, translating laboratory and data requirements into scalable, efficient system features Own the detailed system design, ensuring best practices and engineering standards are met Key Accountabilities Systems Analysis, Design & Estimation Work with Product Owners, Architecture, Security, and Analysts to understand LIMS-specific user needs Create high-level designs, estimate development work, and define non-functional requirements (e.g. system uptime, sample tracking reliability, secure data handling) Act as a technical consultant on testing strategies and contribute to DevOps practices Software Development & Support Design, build, and maintain LIMS modules and supporting cloud infrastructure Implement deployment strategies (CI/CD), maintain documentation, and support disaster recovery planning Lead on testing activities (TDD, BDD, automation), conduct code reviews, and provide third-line support for LIMS-related issues Agile Ways of Working Actively contribute to Agile ceremonies Help refine the backlog and reduce technical debt within the LIMS codebase Promote a transparent, user-focused culture aligned with Scrum values and Anglian Water's mission What does it take to be a Software Engineer?
