Job Description
The salary for this role is £42,858 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week; however, we actively support requests for flexible working. This role is based in Culham, Oxfordshire.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.
The Role
As a Plasma Exhaust Modeller, you will develop and use primarily numerical/computational physical models to describe the behaviour of plasma at the periphery of tokamak devices. Key duties include:
* Modelling of the scrape-off layer (SOL) transport, including the effect of neutral particles;
* Providing interpretative modelling of MAST-U with 2D and 3D fluid codes;
* Validating simulation results and theoretical findings against MAST-U experimental measurements.
Your career development as a scientist will be strongly supported, including working towards chartership with the Institute of Physics.
Additional Responsibilities
* Contribute to and lead the development of new SOL predictive and interpretative codes;
* Support experimentalists by providing theoretical insight when requested;
* Complete projects for validating numerical and theoretical results against MAST-U experiments;
* Propose experiments and lead/contribute to research on MAST-U;
* Report research findings in refereed journal articles as well as at internal meetings, workshops, and international conferences.

* PhD in plasma physics or equivalent.
* Knowledge of and/or experience implementing software engineering best practices.
* Proven ability to conduct independent research.
* A good team-player with an outward-facing work ethos, as you will work closely with scientists around the world.
* Good oral and written communication skills.
