The Education other than at School (EOTAS) is a unique post in Lambeth and Southwark. You will work as part of the School Nurse Service as an autonomous practitioner, providing strategic support for young people aged 5-19, many of whom are hard to reach and have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Your responsibilities include managing a caseload of children, focusing on vulnerable home-schooled children, children attending alternative provisions, and those permanently excluded from school.
You will develop links with the borough college to work with children on child protection plans, collaborating with a dedicated school nurse team who share information as part of a think-family approach to working with vulnerable families. Additionally, you will forge strong partnerships with professionals such as GPs, youth offending services, and the education welfare service (EWS).
Your duties include:
1. Conducting health assessments, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for your client group.
2. Building and maintaining effective partnerships with key agencies to meet client needs.
3. Managing your day-to-day caseload for young people accessing EOTAS and providing cross-cover within the Lambeth School Nurse Service.
4. Delivering health promotion and prevention education using Making Every Contact Count (MECC).
5. Maintaining clear communication with clients, families, carers, and professionals to ensure individualised, client-centred care.
6. Empowering families in managing chronic conditions and preventing complications.
7. Applying risk analysis and safeguarding vulnerable individuals using the assessment framework for children in need.
Our services are part of Guy’s & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, providing comprehensive services to over 121,000 children and young people in Lambeth and Southwark. This includes universal services like health visiting, family nurse partnership, and school nursing, as well as specialist services such as community paediatrics, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, complex needs nursing, sickle cell, and audiology. We operate from two main health centres, Mary Sheridan Centre and Sunshine House, and provide services in schools, community buildings, homes, and occasionally hospitals, with over 176,000 appointments annually.
Your role involves:
1. Identifying and mitigating risks to health and wellbeing, assessing emergencies, and leading safeguarding responses.
2. Acting as an advocate, providing empathetic support and transparent information to families and carers.
3. Inspiring the team towards innovative, high-standard practice.
4. Offering guidance on vulnerable children and young people, especially within EOTAS.
5. Representing the school nursing service at relevant meetings as the EOTAS nurse.
6. Proactively developing your professional knowledge and skills.
7. Maintaining confidentiality and security of information.
