Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Drama Specialist develops an engaging theater arts curriculum supporting Readers Theater. This interactive curriculum encourages children to express their characters through voice and gestures, fostering self-confidence and reading fluency. Responsible for creating and implementing camp curriculum that promotes literacy and social-emotional development, focusing on growth in skills, self-awareness, self-expression, and group relationship building.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure camper safety as the top priority, emphasizing personal safety and emotional well-being.
* Create and implement a theme-related drama curriculum with choices, using drama to promote healthy activity, creativity, and reading skills.
* Document curriculum and keep samples for future use.
* Plan and execute recreational and educational programs emphasizing group participation.
* Create an active, engaging environment.
* Model YMCA values, develop appropriate relationships, and maintain boundaries with campers.
* Act as a peer leader, setting an example for staff behavior and presentation.
* Use positive discipline and reinforcement techniques, ensuring staff do the same.
* Communicate expectations clearly to counselors and maintain open communication with supervisors.
* Report incidents immediately and document accordingly.
* Communicate program updates, issues, and concerns as they arise.
* Assist with planning and executing camp events and family activities.
* Coordinate camp activities, participate actively, and take ownership of all aspects of the program.
* Attend staff meetings and training, incorporate training into daily interactions.
* Maintain and care for all program areas and supplies, managing inventory weekly.
* Assist with pre/post-care and transportation as needed, ensuring proper transitions.
* Perform additional duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility.
* Follow YMCA, DPH, and ACA policies and guidelines.
Work Environment
* Moderate to high noise levels.
* Availability for up to 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, between 7am-6pm.
* Indoor and outdoor work, sun exposure involved.
* Maintain a professional image aligned with YMCA mission and goals.
Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications
* Must be 18+, with a high school diploma or equivalent; college experience preferred. Theater education or degree is a plus.
* Passion for working with children, with the ability to understand their needs and set appropriate boundaries.
* Commitment to diversity and working harmoniously with others.
* Effective communication skills.
* Current First Aid, CPR, Oxygen administration, and other certifications as required.
* Complete Child Abuse Prevention and Respect in the Workplace training within the first four weeks.
