We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer with proven experience in data centre or critical infrastructure environments to join our engineering team. This role provides technical leadership across all mechanical systems supporting mission-critical operations and infrastructure builds.
The Mechanical Engineer will act as a technical expert within the engineering function, responsible for design, assurance, and operational support of mechanical systems across our data centre estate. You will play a key role in data centre design, build, and capacity expansion projects, ensuring that all systems, from cooling and ventilation to environmental control, deliver optimal performance and energy efficiency.
This position is ideal for a technically capable and innovative engineer who thrives on ensuring the resilience, safety, and efficiency of mechanical systems in high-availability environments.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead or contribute to the design and specification of mechanical systems for data centre and critical infrastructure builds, including HVAC, chilled water, CRAC/CRAH, and free cooling systems.
* Review and validate design documentation, calculations, and system layouts to ensure compliance with our standards and best practice in energy-efficient design.
* Provide engineering assurance and technical input during concept, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover phases.
* Act as a technical authority supporting data centre operations and maintenance teams.
* Provide engineering input into maintenance strategies, operational procedures, and energy optimisation initiatives.
* Support incident response, fault investigation, and system recovery planning.
* Ensure all mechanical systems meet performance, safety, and resilience targets.
* Ensure all designs and operations comply with statutory regulations, internal safety policies, and ISO management frameworks.
* Maintain and update technical documentation, schematics, O&M manuals, and asset records.
* Drive improvements in system reliability, capacity, and sustainability through innovative mechanical design and operational practices.
* Support capacity planning, airflow management, and environmental efficiency initiatives.
* Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical knowledge sharing within the organisation.
Essential Experience:
* Minimum HND in Mechanical Engineering (or higher).
* Demonstrable experience in data centre or critical infrastructure mechanical design, build, or operational support.
* Strong technical understanding of HVAC systems, chilled water plants, CRAC/CRAH systems, free cooling, and mechanical control systems.
* Familiarity with relevant standards including CIBSE, ASHRAE, and BS EN codes.
* Experience in providing technical assurance and engineering guidance in live operational environments or on construction projects.
* Competence in reviewing and producing mechanical designs, schematics, and specifications.
Desirable:
* Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering.
* Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
* Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and airflow modelling within data centre environments.
