Overview

Over the past 12 months, AO has seen incredible growth, and with ambitious plans ahead, now's the perfect time to bring in our first‑ever Data Governance, Security & Compliance Lead. This is a brand‑new, game‑changing role that sits at the heart of our data strategy. Reporting into our Head of Data, you'll take the lead on shaping and delivering our group‑wide approach to Data Security, Compliance and Governance. Your work will help AO unlock the full potential of our data, making sure it's high‑quality, reliable and trusted across the business. This is your chance to build something from the ground up. You'll bring together strategy, stakeholders and solutions under one roof, creating a future‑fit data foundation that supports AO's next chapter. It's a hands‑on leadership role where you'll define the roadmap, deliver the solutions, and make the case for scaling the team as we grow. If you're ready to make a real impact and own something big, this could be the role for you.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead the charge on defining and delivering AO's Data Governance, Security & Compliance strategies—making sure we're set up for a data‑driven future.
* Own the roadmap and drive the projects that bring your strategy to life, from design to delivery.
* Get stuck in—you’ll be hands‑on with implementing standards, tools and third‑party tech.
* Take ownership of audit points, risk registers and security requirements for the Data team.
* Solve problems with impact—propose and deliver solutions to close audit gaps, building the case for extra resources where needed.
* Build the model—create and roll out our operating framework across Tech and the wider business.
* Shape the conversation—chair the Data Governance Board and evolve its structure to meet changing business needs.
* Set the standard—define data processes, best practices and design patterns, and make sure they’re followed across AO.
* Drive awareness—lead literacy initiatives to embed governance, security and compliance into our culture.
* Influence at every level—build strong relationships with senior leaders, stakeholders and teams across AO.
* Champion capability—oversee training and upskilling in the latest data practices.
* Collaborate deeply with Data Science, Engineering, Platform and Analytics teams to keep governance front and centre.
* Manage partnerships—work closely with vendors, stakeholders and third‑party providers to keep our data capabilities sharp.

Qualifications

You bring deep experience in governance, security and compliance, ideally from a similar role or team. You’ve led data projects, delivered clear ROI, and know how to drive results in a fast‑paced environment. You're a creative problem‑solver with an eye for detail, and you know how to turn complex ideas into clear, compelling messages—whether you're talking to tech teams or senior leaders.

Benefits

* Holidays: 25 days, plus bank holidays (increasing to 27 days after 2 years with us!).
* Pension: Contribute 5% of your annual salary and we'll do the same.
* VIP at the AO Arena: Opportunities to win free tickets and pre‑sale access.
* Health & wellbeing: discounted gym membership, an onsite spa and our Help @ Hand scheme giving you access to virtual GPs, Mental Health support and much more.
* Exclusive discounts across our product range.
* Family leave: Enhanced Maternity, Paternity and Adoption leave.
* Making a difference: 2 fully paid days a year to donate your time to any charity of your choice.
* On‑site perks: free parking, complimentary breakfast and coffee at our subsidised in‑house coffee shop.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement

AO is for everyone! We should all feel that we belong. We’re creating a welcoming and inclusive place to work and are proud to be different. From how we look to how we talk to our customers, we skip to the beat of our very own drum. Being different together is our superpower, making us stronger, more creative, and better at what we do. We believe the people we employ should reflect the diversity of our customer base; that way, we can communicate in a way that recognises all backgrounds, races, ethnicities, genders, ages, religions, abilities, and sexual orientations. And that's why we're asking these questions. Making sure our recruitment process is inclusive is a key part of what we're doing at AO to encourage diversity as an employer.
