About us
At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic.
Dyson offers a unique opportunity for skilled individuals to invent, design and develop market leading products for the global market. By working in our world class research, design and development (RDD) department, these professionals have the opportunity to work alongside leading technical specialists and highly motivated creative people to create products which fulfil our vision of being truly different and better than our competitors.
About the role
At Dyson, we are passionate about technology, and we rely on exceptional people to create and deliver products to our customers. Due to continued growth, Dyson are looking to appoint a Lead Electro-Acoustic Engineer to join a growing Audio Research Team. You will be key in driving the development of new audio products from initial design through to feasibility verification with a strong emphasis on design for manufacture.
Reporting to the Senior Manager and based in our state-of-the-art research facility in the UK the Lead Electro-Acoustic Engineer will form an integral role in the expansion of the Technical Research team, a multi-disciplinary team delivering Motor & Power Systems across our product portfolio. The Lead Electro-Acoustic Engineer will bring new expertise to the team being the primary source of knowledge regarding electro-acoustic systems within the audio domain, covering driver design, modelling, and verification. Additionally, as this is a new team the candidate is expected to take the lead role in developing a strategy for the Audio Research Team, expanding on our exciting ideas with their existing knowledge and expertise in the field. You will also support ongoing downstream work by communicating regularly with the established global multi-disciplinary wearables team to help drive the development of next generation products.
Key responsibilities:
1. Be the primary source of knowledge at Dyson for everything related to electro-acoustics and electro-acoustic integration.
2. Work with senior product stakeholders within the project leadership teams to define key product and electro-acoustic sub-system requirements/specifications.
3. Play a key role in the design and optimisation of both the preliminary and the detailed stages of new electro-acoustic systems, focusing on achieving robust solutions considering mass manufacturing.
4. Work with mechanical, electronic, acoustic, DSP, and software engineers to develop prototypes.
5. Develop and champion accurate, in-depth simulation techniques both within the research team and the wider group with associated experimental validation.
6. Analyse results, summarise findings and communicate to other members of RDD including senior managers and directors.
7. Liaise with development teams to ensure effective transfer of technology into the future product range.
8. Develop new technologies and understanding in the electro-acoustic design domain, generating high-value IP concepts.
About you

10. An excellent working knowledge and experience in the design and integration of electro-acoustic systems within the audio domain (5 years+), preferably in the headphone domain.
11. Expertise in the use of Finite Element Modelling (COMSOL preferred) to simulate complex multi-physics problems coupling the electrical, mechanical, and acoustic domain.
12. Extensive experience and demonstrable knowledge in building systems models (Simulink, MATLAB/Python) of electro-acoustic systems.
13. Capable of performing analytical calculations (e.g., lumped model simulations) to support higher fidelity work packages referring to best-practise textbooks and or/academic papers where necessary.
14. Experience carrying out acoustic measurements using HATS, ear simulators, and acoustic measurement tools, for example from Audio Precision, B&K, G.R.A.S., Listen Inc.
15. Experience carrying out vibration measurements with a range of sensors (contact and non-contact methods).
16. Experience in advance digital signal processing techniques, control and psychoacoustics would be a significant advantage.
17. Experience in mentoring fellow engineers in the best practise of electro-acoustic design would be an advantage.
18. Experience in the use of Siemens NX (or similar CAD packages) and generating engineering drawings to GD & T standards would be an advantage.
