As part of every research project we ensure the highest possible care and ethical standards promoting a culture of best practice. A small proportion of our research involves the use of animals, mainly finfish, and we only use animals when no suitable alternative is available. We are currently seeking to recruit a Lay Chair to our Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB).

A core component of the role of AWERB is to conduct an ethical review of studies that involve animals to advise whether they should be supported. To follow the development and outcome of these studies and advise on the application of the 3Rs (Reduction, Refinement and Replacement). Additionally, the AWERB advises on matters related to the welfare of animals, their accommodation, care and use at the University.

We strongly encourage expressions of interest from people from diverse backgrounds including gender, identity, race, age, class, and ethnicity.
