Lectureship in Early Modern Global History – Department of History
Location: Egham. Salary: £49,979 per annum – including London Allowance. Post Type: Full Time. Hours per Week: 35. Weeks per Year: 52. Closing Date: 23:59 BST on Monday 25 May 2026. Reference: 0426-126.
Full-Time, Fixed-Term (One Year). Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in Early Modern Global History to teach in the Department of History and Classics for one year from 1 September 2026. This fixed-term post provides cover for a Lecturer who is taking up a Leverhulme Research Fellowship in 2026/27. The successful candidate will pursue their own research and will be encouraged to develop their publications and contribute to the Department’s REF submission. They will be expected to contribute to teaching and administration in the department, delivering lectures and leading seminar groups attached to the yearlong early modern Gateway module for first year students, “Renaissance to Revolutions: Europe and the World, 1500-1800,” as well as survey modules for second year students “The Tudor Monarchy 1485-1603” in Term 1 and “Spanish and Portuguese Empires in the Americas, 1450-1650” in Term 2. They may also be asked to contribute to the required introductory module for first year students, “History in the Making.”
Responsibilities
* Deliver lectures and lead seminar groups for the yearlong early modern Gateway module and associated survey modules for second year students.
* Contribute to the required introductory module for first year students, “History in the Making.”
* Pursue own research and publish; contribute to the Department’s REF submission.
* Contribute to teaching and administration in the department, including recruitment efforts and pastoral support for students.
Qualifications
* PhD in a relevant field by the start date and a developing publication record in Early Modern history.
* Experience of undergraduate teaching; ability to develop teaching materials and engage creatively with students.
* Willingness to contribute to recruitment and pastoral support for students.
