Consultant in Acute Medicine

This post is for a consultant in Acute Medicine and offers a whole‑time role in a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
The position will support the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU) in strengthening early management of medical emergencies across the Emergency Department (ED) and AMU, including the management of medical patients during the early part of their hospital stay via a large embedded Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area and an Enhanced Care area. The post holder will also contribute to teaching and training in acute medicine, and will participate in the out‑of‑hours General Internal Medicine Physician of the Day (PoD) rota with a 3% on‑call supplement.
Main duties of the job
* 5.0 PA AMU DCC fixed sessions – as per indicative planner
* 0.5 PA AMU Annualised Session – 1 flexible cover session (alternate week = 20 per year)
* 0.5 PA AMU Weekend cover 1:8 – remuneration includes TOIL; discuss at job plan meeting
* 1.5 PA AMU DCC admin
* 2.5 PA SPA
* 3% on‑call supplement
Additional duties may include evening cover and accommodation for non‑working days based on service demand.
Responsibilities
* Manage medical emergencies in the ED and AMU, including SDEC and Enhanced Care areas
* Provide early assessment and management of medical admissions
* Deliver high‑quality teaching and training to junior staff and medical trainees
* Participate in the out‑of‑hours PoD rota
* Support audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives
* Supervise junior medical staff and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
* UK‑trained doctors must also hold a CCT or be within six months of award; non‑UK‑trained doctors must provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
* Valid Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider status (as applicable)
* Specialty Certificate Examination in Acute Medicine
* An appropriate higher degree (e.g. MD/PhD) or equivalent medical qualification
Knowledge & Experience
* Excellent communication with patients and colleagues
* Strong knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement
* Demonstrated range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the Acute Medicine curriculum
* Ability to undertake robust audit and/or research within team structure
* Experience teaching clinical and generic skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
* Evidence of relevant research (presentations, publications in peer‑reviewed journals)
