The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading the national engineering function at PERI Canada. This role sets the strategic direction for engineering operations, driving excellence through robust systems, processes, and people development. The Director ensures cost-effective and high-quality engineering solutions while aligning resources to support business objectives and compliance with safety and professional standards. This leader plays a pivotal role in advancing continuous improvement, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration across all Canadian locations.
What you'll do on a typical day:
* Lead all Engineering Department activities, including Assembly and Site Services functions.
* Develop and execute the national engineering strategy aligned with business goals.
* Represent the Engineering function on the subsidiary Management Board.
* Promote interdepartmental collaboration to support organizational success.
* Define and implement best practices, processes, and systems across engineering teams.
Operational Excellence:
* Ensure engineering work complies with provincial/territorial Professional Engineering regulatory bodies.
* Oversee departmental standards, policies, and administrative compliance.
* Use engineering judgment to minimize liability risks and protect company interests.
* Monitor performance metrics, drive improvements, and report on outcomes.
* Manage cost structures, implement cost-reduction strategies, and meet budget plans.
* Analyze and recommend initiatives to support internal and external customers.
People and Development:
People & Talent Development:
* Foster a high-performance team culture through coaching, mentorship, and performance management.
* Develop a pipeline of engineering talent via training, internship programs, and external recruitment.
* Promote knowledge development and design efficiency within the engineering team.
Customer & Quality Focus:
* Ensure all applicable quality standards are met and continuously monitored.
* Respond to customer feedback and address quality or execution issues.
* Maintain compliance with PERI Group directives and quality policies.
Health & Safety:
* Ensure compliance with all applicable local, regional, and national H&S standards.
* Conduct regular audits and make necessary adjustments to maintain safety compliance.
* Fulfill responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
* Manage sourcing and purchasing of project-related equipment and custom fabrication services.
Other Duties:
* Perform additional responsibilities as assigned in support of business and engineering excellence.
What you'll need to be successful:
* University degree in Civil Engineering
* Registered as a Professional Engineer
* Minimum 10 years of senior leadership in an engineering role.
* Proven experience in developing and executing engineering strategies.
* Background in structural engineering and familiarity with construction industry practices (preferred).
* Proficient in CAD and structural analysis software.
* Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Skilled in team leadership, coaching, and talent development.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* High integrity and strong business ethics.
* Sound understanding of Canadian Building Codes and Standards.
* Fluent in health and safety regulations and practices.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
* Knowledge of PERI systems and products considered an asset.
