HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Plant Engineer
Location
Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).
Role Responsibilities
* Assist with inspecting, maintaining, and troubleshooting plant equipment such as cranes, excavators, compressors, and generators to ensure reliable performance.
* Gather and analyse equipment performance data to support operational efficiency, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance activities.
* Maintain accurate records of maintenance, inspections, and repairs while supporting compliance with health, safety, environmental, and industry regulations.
* Collaborate with engineers on design tweaks and process improvements, contributing ideas to optimise equipment usage and reduce environmental impact.
* Provide on-site technical support for troubleshooting equipment issues and actively contribute to a safe working environment by following all safety protocols.
Qualifications and Experience
* Currently studying Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, ideally in your penultimate or final year.
* Possess basic knowledge of plant and construction equipment, including hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and electrical systems.
* Familiar with engineering software such as CAD and MATLAB, as well as basic data analysis tools.
* Demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication within a team.
* Proactive and eager to learn, with any prior construction or mechanical engineering experience and knowledge of predictive maintenance or CMMS considered beneficial.
