About the Role
Balfour Beatty has been selected by BP to construct a fully integrated gas‑fired power station with carbon capture and storage as part of the Net Zero Teesside project in Redcar and Cleveland. We are looking for a Lean & Business Improvement Specialist to support continuous improvement and efficiency projects across major projects and highways, focusing on process improvements that drive productivity, improve safety, and create effective delivery methods.
Responsibilities
General and Task Management
* Analyze current practices to identify improvement opportunities and educate on better processes
* Devise and test solutions and roll out new ways of working
* Participate in project delivery rhythm (SIC, CP & TMR) go/no‑go decisions
* Perform workplace audits and streamline processes
* Process mapping, value stream mapping, and layout sequencing for productivity gains
* Recommend waste‑cutting changes to management
* Deploy problem‑solving methodologies and support teams
* Demonstrate and champion performance excellence behaviours
* Establish “best practice” methods and share with the wider industry
* Implement standard work, visual factory, and error‑proofing (poka yoke)
* Continuously train team and supply‑chain partners
* Conduct root‑cause analysis and create innovative solutions
* Carry out time and motion studies for productivity improvements
* Monitor task completion and maintain records in appropriate systems
* Promote high standards through personal example and team rollout
* Conduct risk assessments of processes and tasks
* Improve safety, quality, delivery, productivity, cost, and efficiency
* Facilitate continuous improvement implementation and employee involvement
* Communicate changes effectively to influence and motivate stakeholders
* Ensure process‑improvement initiatives align with business requirements
* Build a culture of engagement across the business
People Management
* Coach and support less‑experienced team members
* Foster operational excellence behaviours through coaching, mentoring, and training
* Develop strategic delivery and supply‑chain partners on site to ensure they are part of the improvement culture
Relationship Management
* Coordinate with other departments, customers, suppliers, and service providers
* Maintain effective interfaces with departmental staff
* Provide feedback to management to improve operations and promote continuous improvement activities
* Support compliance with Health & Safety, quality, environmental standards, and company policies
Who We’re Looking For
Skills and Attributes
* Understanding of lean principles, tools, and techniques
* Awareness of ISO 9001, 44001, and 18404 is advantageous
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to present data effectively
* Analytical and problem‑solving skills
* Understanding of cost and financial impacts
* Initiative and self‑direction
Qualifications and Experience
* Relevant business, commercial, or engineering degree (preferred but not required)
* Experience applying lean tools and techniques in construction or continuous improvement
* Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent qualification
* Substantial process improvement experience with demonstrable knowledge
* Planning and prioritising of activities
* Assertiveness, resilience, and openness to change
* Collaborative approach to working with others
* Moral courage, openness, and honesty in all dealings
* Strong relationship‑building skills
