The post holder will play an important role in this dynamic team.

The successful candidate will be hardworking, motivated team player, including flexibility to respond rapidly, working under the direction of senior nurses within the team. You will need to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service. and be able to work effectively with partnership departments and Surgeons across a 7 day working week 24 hours a day. Surgical experience not essential as training will be given.

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality nursing care and participate in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the care needs for the patient group.

To deliver compassionate person-centred care, and treat patients, service users, their families and their carers with consideration, dignity and the respect you would want for yourself or your family.

To play an active part in the continuing development of the unit and contribute to the maintenance of an environment conducive to the delivery of high standards of patient care, by promoting good communication and relationships between staff, patients, relatives and visitors.

Ward 11 is a wonderful place to work, We are a ward dedicated to patients undergoing complex surgery, including general surggery, colorectal surgery, Breast, ENT. It is a well run and organized Ward.


Job responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 2 CSW to join the ward. the successful candidate will support registered nursing staff and other health care professionals in the delivery of nursing care to patients at a level determined by training, competence and experience. They will also assist in the maintenance of the care environment and perform housekeeping, clerical, ancillary and portering roles as requested.

NB Postholder should only undertake duties for which training has been received and where relevant, competency based assessment successfully completed. Postholder must make nurses and others aware of any limitations to competence.

Key Responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

* Assist in the provision of patient care in accordance with the care plan prescribed by registered nurses. Examples of duties include delivery of hygiene, nutrition and hydration, continence care, pressure area care, mobility, rehabilitation and psychological support.
* Assist in the taking of patients observations as appropriate to the level of knowledge skills and competence achieved. Record these in accordance with trust and local policies.
* Assist healthcare professional with treatment and carry out additional care roles under supervision and as determined by the levels of competence achieved.
* Report changes to patients condition or health status to registered nurses
* Assist in care and support of visitors
* Maintain confidentiality in relation to patients records working within the principles of Caldicott guidelines

NON CLINICAL REPOSNSIBILITIES

* Perform general clerical activities to support the area. These duties will include answering the telephone taking and passing on of messages to the relevant person, filing, keeping patients records tidy etc

Confidentiality and Data Protection

Health and Safety

Individual employees of Walsall Healthcare Trust and other NHS employees contracted to work on the organisations premises have an equal responsibility, along with managers and supervisors, for maintaining safe working practices for the health and safety of themselves and other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.

Infection Control

Employees will work to minimise any risk to clients, the public and other employees from Healthcare Associated Infection including MRSA and C. difficile by ensuring that they are compliant with the Health and Social Care Act 2008 Code of Practice (and as amended from time to time) for the prevention and control of Healthcare Associated Infections (The Hygiene Code); and by ensuring that they are familiar with the organisations Infection Control polices located on the Intranet.

Further responsibilities involve employees in ensuring that service users and members of the public are actively engaged (using a variety of methods) in appropriate service delivery, service development and decision making within their service area and the wider organisation. Determination of these responsibilities should be in conjunction with your line manager and delivered accordingly.

The organisation operates a No Smoking policy.

Policies and Procedures

All employees need to be aware of the organisations policies, procedures and protocols relating to their service and work within the guidelines at all times.

Employees have a major role in suggesting and implementing improvement to services and in exercising professional responsibility for both themselves and their peers within an open no-blame culture.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* QCF/NVQ Level 2 in Healthcare or equivalent qualification/relevant experience
* Maths and English qualification
* Care Certificate or ability to complete within 12 weeks of commencing employment


Experience

* Able to use and update IT systems with patient information
* Able to assess patient's health, safety and wellbeing while undertaking personal care and referring/escalating to other staff as appropriate.
* Ability to recognise limitations of knowledge and competence and practice within these boundaries.
* Experience in a healthcare environment
* Manual handing of patients (including toileting, bathing, and turning patients), equipment and stores


Flexibility

* Participation in flexible work patterns / shift working may be required, to meet the needs of the service.
* Flexibility to work across the Health Economy


Communication Skills

* Evidence of effective communication skills.
* Ability to communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and / or carers.
* Ability to communicate effectively with staff / multidisciplinary team.
* An understanding of their role within the team.
* Positive and enthusiastic approach to work.
