Our client is a leading Russell Group University experiencing growth within their Estates Department. They are recruiting a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join an established team responsible for delivering complex mechanical projects. This role is crucial in ensuring the university’s electrical infrastructure is designed, maintained, and upgraded to high standards.
The Position
The Mechanical Building Services Engineer reports to the Senior Mechanical Building Services Engineer and will be responsible for preparing mechanical building service designs, engineering drawings, specifications, and supervising mechanical building service installations across the university estate.
Responsibilities
1. Produce schemes and drawings for mechanical building services, including design calculations and estimates.
2. Prepare monthly reports for minor capital projects.
3. Create technical work specifications, including Employer’s Requirements for Design & Build projects.
4. Manage and supervise contractors on-site from initial design stages.
5. Meet with clients to determine scope, financial implications, and project planning; report on implementation and financial progress.
6. Maintain close budgetary control over projects managed by the Engineering Section.
7. Conduct feasibility studies and prepare reports.
8. Ensure all works are carried out effectively and efficiently, following established procedures and policies.
9. Adhere to LU procurement regulations and guidance.
10. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
11. Carry out Health and Safety audits when leading projects, in conjunction with Safe Systems of Work and approved procedures.
12. Liaise with external contractors to deliver mechanical installation works according to specifications.
The Person
1. Minimum of an HND in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Building Services.
2. Accredited qualification in a specialized mechanical discipline (e.g., Gas, LEV, Refrigeration).
3. Membership of relevant institutions (e.g., CIBSE) or working towards IENG status.
4. Ability to project-manage clients and contractors, including briefing processes.
5. Excellent planning skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
6. Practical skills with the ability to develop engineering solutions for new mechanical installation requirements.
7. Professional with excellent interpersonal skills to develop strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
8. Ability to manage multiple priorities within conflicting timescales.
9. Service-oriented approach to project delivery.
10. Proven ability to manage budgets effectively.
11. Competent in AutoCAD and familiar with Microsoft Office packages.
