Overview

This post provides consultant cover to the Paediatric Critical Care Transport service (CoMET). Details of the breakdown between these two areas are described below.


Responsibilities

* Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients referred to CoMET and support for those managing children requiring critical care interventions elsewhere in the hospital and throughout the region.
* Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
* Supervise and train junior medical staff.
* Be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
* Teaching, research and administration; proactively develop the service.
* Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.
* Provide day-to-day leadership of the clinical activities in the paediatric critical care transport services and cover for absences caused by late night clinical activities or retrieval work.
* Participate in audit activities in the directorate relevant to critical care transport.
* Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) to support revalidation; annual appraisal and up-to-date statutory and mandatory training as required by the Trust.
* Supervise and manage junior medical staff, ensuring compliance with local employment and human resource policies and procedures.
* Assume clinical accountability for the transport service during duty hours and maintain knowledge of equipment, operational policies, and staffing levels/competencies.
* Coordinate urgent conference calls for high-priority transfers; provide initial clinical advice and facilitate discussions between referring clinicians, the designated accepting consultant, and other specialists as needed.
* Triage incoming calls to determine the appropriate transport team composition and offer clinical guidance during transfers.
* Personally undertake transfers when patient acuity requires consultant-level care; support training and development of new team members, including supervised transfers.
* Be involved in appraising and assessing residents; conduct utilisation reviews to ensure effective resource management; report incidents in line with a just culture approach to safety.
* Contribute to audit and research initiatives and adhere to all service policies and protocols.
* Participate in the management and continuous improvement of the service and actively contribute to clinical governance and audit across the department and Trust.
* Provide mentoring and support to both medical and nursing staff.
