The University Strategy 2035 sets our ambition to develop high-quality, impactful research and knowledge exchange (RKE) that transforms lives, and which makes a world-leading contribution in the areas of green innovation and sustainability, health and wellbeing and inclusive communities. This post-doctoral research fellowship scheme is introduced to support strategic development of research, RKE environment and impact with the QR funding allocated for the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences (FABSS). The plan is to support 0.6fte post-doctoral research fellowships (24 months each, UW9 posts) under this scheme.
With a PhD or near completion or other relevant post-graduate research qualification, the fellows will be creative, motivated and have experience in relevant research, methods and outputs. Three projects are as follows
We are seeking to appoint a Post Doctoral Research Fellow to support the following project.
Dealing with the legacy of conflict and trauma in Britain and Northern Ireland 1968-present
We are seeking an enthusiastic scholar of contemporary UK history to work with Professors Keith Gildart, John Buckley and Dr Eamonn O’Kane on a project examining the impact that conflict has had on two distinct societies within the UK through an examination of the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland and the 1984/85 miners’ strike in the Midlands and Northwest of England. How the legacy of these conflicts should be addressed remains debated and destabilizing long after the disputes themselves have been (largely) ‘resolved’. The project will offer an evaluation of attempts to deal with the conflicts’ legacy from political, social and cultural perspectives. The successful candidate will work with us to research the topic(s), produce academic publications and explore future funding opportunities.
We are looking for someone who has a PhD in twentieth century British history or political science. A familiarity with archival research and conducting interviews is required. A research background into either 1980s British social and economic history or the conflict in Northern Ireland is desirable but not essential. This project is aligned to the University’s 2035 RKE strategy and seeks to further develop partnerships with civil society and not-for-profit organisations, as well as informing public policy and discourse. The outputs from the project will contribute to the University’s History unit REF2029 submission
