About the role
Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting a Principal Primary Substation Designer to join the Power T&D team in Leeds.
We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.
Role Purpose
The main function of the role is to lead the HV Primary Engineering design delivery for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV with the assistance of the Design Engineers.
In addition, the Principal Plant Engineer would assist the Design Delivery Managers in the day to day running of the engineers and technicians teams.
The role also includes leading the team in planning and procurement responsibilities as detailed below for delivery of substation projects.
General Responsibilities:
Ensure duties are carried out in accordance with Standard Company Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Procedures and Business Process Manual
Delivery of engineering design to programme, quality and budgets, and lead safety and sustainability by Design into the engineering delivery.
Functionally the authorised approver of designs (and associated settings) on contracts in accordance with the published design/check/approve authorisation levels.
Identify (and contribute to) the development and training needs of the design team as appropriate to skill level / experience
Identify and effectively manage inter-disciplinary design gaps in collaboration with the appropriate project engineering mangers.
Assistance to the Design Delivery Manager in the day to day running of the design department as deemed appropriate to skill level / experience including carrying out PDRs for team members and provide continuous team support.
Planning Responsibilities
Input into the allocation of work packages, coordinate workload and agree priorities withing the Primary Plant Team.
Prepare, contribute to, check and review DEMP (Design and Engineering Management Plans)
Ensure the team understands and is working in accordance with the GMEE (Group Minimum Engineering Expectations)
Ensure the team updates and inputs to the costing (PARAM) system as and when required.
Upon contract award, liaise and co-ordinate contract requirements with Design Engineers, Project Managers and other Balfour Beatty PT&D Departments at earliest opportunity
Establish Design content of work package and the Design resource to achieve the required time scales, in line with Project Programme
1. Effectively control, update and report on progress throughout contract life, giving estimates to complete and highlight potential resource problems to Design Manager / Project Manager
Input into design reviews and cost reporting
Input into the allocation of work packages, coordinate workload and agree priorities.
What you'll be doing
2. Co-ordinate with other Balfour Beatty Departments as necessary to specify and quantify equipment / material to achieve greatest benefit to the company
3. Prepare instructions for all materials and special tools required for site and pass this information to the Project Manager
4. Identify all relevant standards and Customer requirements, ensuring compliance with relevant National / International Standards and legislation, and contract specification
5. Design work to be undertaken with due regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures and production of Designer Risk Assessments, as necessary, to fulfil the Companys obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations.
6. Examine contract documentation and establish the Companys scope of work including termination boundaries. Where this differs with the tendered contract requirement then these differences should be highlighted to the Project Manager with options and solutions for resolutions.
7. Attend and contribute to Design Review / Contract Close-out Meetings, ensuring that appropriate items are actioned in a timely manner
8. Liaise with Engineers, Designers and Technicians on drawings requirements
9. Lead the technical direction of the engineering team, taking best practice and industry developments into engineering methodology.
10. Ensure all required models and drawings have an adequate level of review and approval including the supplier and subcontractor supply chains. Incorporating the best practice of BIM as established in the Engineering team.
11. In conjunction with other Balfour Beatty Power T&D Departments, prepare Installation and Commissioning packages, in a timely manner as dictated by the Site Installation & Commissioning Schedule
12. Prepare special equipment/novel solution Test Specifications and Procedures in collaboration with the commissioning department,
13. Ensure accurate final records are prepared and submitted to client in line with the requirements of the contract specification
14. Specify any test certificates and/or operations & maintenance manuals as part of technical spec and/or purchase order requisition
15. Check and approve engineering designs prepared by team members.
16. Carry out engineering checks as deemed necessary and in line with the requirements of the Business Process Manual
17. Lead the Design team from different disciplines to deliver design to the Customer specification requirements, ensuring compliance with relevant National / International Standards and legislation.
18. Lead Design work with due regard to Health & Safety Procedures and the Companys obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations. Any perceived risks and mitigation measures should be advised to Project Manager for effective action.
19. Provide support to Type registration, standardisation initiatives
20. Provide support to manufacturing & construction departments in resolving design related issues
21. Provide support to tendering for design deliverables, estimates and customer meetings
Who we're looking for
Education : HND in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Experience : Autocad or similar is preferred but not essential
: Microsoft Office packages
: Working in a Design Office environment over 10 years of experience
: Liaising with customers and suppliers
: Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs
: Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated power system components
: Experience as a senior HV Substation Primary Plant Design Engineer
: Basic understanding of P&C aspects preferable.
: TP141 HV Substation qualification is an advantage
