About The Role
We are growing our regional maritime teams and are recruiting a Principal Ports/Maritime Engineer (Design Manager/Associate) to join our maritime team in Scotland and North East England. The role provides advisory, project management, design and supervisory services to a range of private and public sector clients on ports and coastal projects. Current and recent projects include refurbishment and upgrade of linkspans, pier refurbishment works, breakwater works, STAG and OBC studies for new ferry terminals and ferries, long sea outfalls, cooling water intake/outfall systems, and redevelopment of a former shipyard site. There may be opportunities to contribute to projects in other regions as our maritime business grows globally.
Job Description: Reporting to the unit Maritime Account Leader, you will use a high standard of technical capability to deliver maritime projects and support the development of other team members. You will collaborate constructively with colleagues, and conform to our quality, health & safety and environmental management procedures, acting as a role model in their implementation. You will typically contribute to several projects concurrently, plan work using appropriate tools, and manage peaks and troughs in resource demand to meet or exceed targeted profit, deadlines and output quality. You will contribute to bids, defining key selling points and added value, assist with fee calculations and present the commercial case for internal approval. You will follow Mott MacDonald processes for bidding.
Responsibilities:
* Deliver and/or manage multiple maritime projects concurrently, ensuring quality, safety and environmental standards are met.
* Plan and track work, manage resources, and recover projects to meet targets for profit, deadlines and output quality.
* Contribute to bidding and winning work, identify client needs, risks and value, and prepare the commercial case for approvals.
* Lead and mentor team members on technical aspects and share knowledge across the group.
* Engage with clients in a professional manner and develop strong internal and external relationships.
About You
As a Civil or Structural Engineer within the maritime industry, you have experience in the design of port and maritime facilities and have prepared specifications and contract documentation. You are comfortable in client‑facing roles, can establish professional relationships, and can lead project teams while mentoring others. You are well organized with strong planning and management skills and can manage interfaces across technical, commercial and personal areas.
You Will Also Be Able To Demonstrate The Following:
* Degree qualified and chartered with a relevant institution (e.g., ICE).
* Experience in commissioning management and leading design teams.
* Ability to provide high levels of support to clients.
* Clear and precise communication skills, both verbal and in writing.
Desirable but not essential: knowledge or experience of contract administration and coastal structure design; developing new client relationships and securing new business in the ports and maritime sector.
