Category Buyer
Job Summary
We’re looking for a driven and customer‑focused Category Buyer to shape and strengthen our Steel Fabrication & Tube Assembly portfolio, working closely with steel Fabrication & Tube assembly product suppliers supporting Caterpillar Peterlee and beyond. This role is about more than purchasing — it’s about building trusted, long‑term supplier relationships that deliver real value across our supply network. You’ll bring supply network solutions expertise, applying Quality, Cost, Logistics, Development and Management (QCLDM) principles to optimise performance and maximise value.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop, manage and execute the category strategy, managing policies, agreements, source catalogs, and special procurement programs.
* Recognise potential for cost decreases, inventory reductions and quality improvement; be responsible for sound business proposals, risk assessment.
* Ensure supplier capacity and supply resiliency.
* Act as liaison between the organisation and suppliers to communicate information explicitly, considering production demands and supplier conditions.
* Document supplier performance, maintain strong relationships and manage performance on time sensitivity and production.
Qualifications
* Degree or equivalent experience.
* Knowledge of successful negotiation concepts and techniques; ability to negotiate across organisation and with external vendors.
* Knowledge of contracts management, policies, standards, and processes of managing and administering contracts.
* Knowledge of purchasing policies, regulations, and processes; ability to procure materials, components, equipment and services.
* Knowledge of supplier relationship management concepts and strategies; ability to address critical issues and maintain partnering relationships.
* Knowledge of strategic sourcing methods, technologies, and processes; ability to analyse, improve and re‑evaluate procurement processes continuously.
* Effective communication skills – ability to transmit, receive, and interpret ideas, information, and needs accurately.
Preferred Qualifications
* Knowledge of steel fabrications and tube assemblies.
* Experience/knowledge in heavy manufacturing category buying.
* Experience managing supplier relationships and negotiations, including contracts within steel fabrication and tube assembly industry.

* Contract: Permanent.
* Salary: £49,519 – £61,899.
* Location: Peterlee, County Durham.
* Hours: Full‑time.
* Travel: Up to 25% (Domestic & Europe).
