National Highways has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Spatial Planner to join our multi-disciplinary team in the Southeast region. The Assistant Spatial Planner will play a proactive role in the town and country planning system by helping to ensure that new developments are well located and planned for, and that the travel demands they generate are sustainable.
You will assist and collaborate with our team of Spatial Planners, working with local authority partners and developers to ensure the transport impacts of developments and Local Plans are fully considered, and mitigation measures necessary on our road network are identified.
You will be responsible for managing your own caseloads and coordinating responses with other parts of the organization.
This role will be based in our Basingstoke, Guildford, or Maidstone offices.
* Work with Spatial Planners and the Spatial Planning Manager to engage with internal and external partners, identifying and securing funding opportunities for road network improvements, such as developer contributions and the Housing Infrastructure Fund.
* Discharge responsibilities as a statutory consultee within the planning system, including managing specialist consultant support and escalating complex cases to senior staff.
* Apply specialist knowledge to evaluate the potential impacts of development proposals on our road network, ensuring safe and efficient operation of the SRN, and escalate complex cases.
* Prepare planning consultation responses and reports, supporting more complex cases, and manage aspects of Development Consent Orders and related initiatives.
* Maintain ongoing liaison with key external stakeholders through meetings and forums, providing evidence-based guidance on local plans and sharing information on strategies and future programs.
About You.
* Understanding of spatial planning, town planning, or transport planning, including relevant legislation and development management.
* Knowledge of statutory and regulatory responsibilities, standards, manuals, and guidance.
* Appreciation of the importance of transport issues in the spatial planning context.
* Good understanding of transport appraisal techniques and guidance.
