Overview of Department
The Finance Department provides financial reporting for the firm, including the preparation of partnership and statutory accounts, along with regulatory financial and capital reporting and appropriate tax filings. They manage payments on behalf of the business, payroll, pensions and process staff expenses. They also provide full Board support on all finance matters including support to business development initiatives as well as financial modelling to support decision making.
The Tax team (incorporating both the Group Tax and Product and Investment Tax teams) sits within the wider Finance Department and provides support to the business on all tax issues impacting the Baillie Gifford Group (‘the Group’) and its managed investment funds.
Purpose of Role
This position is an excellent opportunity to join the Group Tax team reporting to the Senior Tax Manager (Group Tax) and the individual will play a key role in helping to deliver the Group Tax function.
The role will primarily be focused on UK and overseas tax compliance and reporting. You’ll help to strengthen Baillie Gifford’s tax processes and controls, embed new technology in the process and work closely with colleagues in the wider Finance Department and beyond and help to ensure tax requirements are delivered effectively across the Group.
Responsibilities
1. Provide support to the Tax Manager (Group Tax) with respect to the Group’s global tax compliance and reporting obligations (circa 13 jurisdictions, including UK, US, China, and Ireland). This includes preparing UK tax returns, reviewing overseas tax returns and related forms, ensuring tax payments are calculated and paid in a timely manner and liaising with global tax advisers.
2. Work with Finance teams on the year-end tax accounting, provisions and tax disclosure notes included in financial statements.
3. Collaborate with Finance teams (including Financial Planning and Analysis) to simplify and streamline our quarterly tax payments in the UK and the US.
4. Enhancing tax compliance processes and controls by integrating technology to facilitate data collection and simplifying the preparation of the Group’s tax compliance.
5. Assist with the implementation and ongoing requirements for Baillie Gifford’s compliance with Pillar 2.
6. Work with Finance teams to ensure that tax compliance and reporting requirements are appropriately considered as part of any relevant internal change initiatives and/or new external tax reporting requirements.
7. Provide support and assistance to the wider Group Tax team as required.
Qualifications:
8. Completed relevant professional accounting (CA or equivalent), tax (CTA) or legal qualification.
Your knowledge and experience:
9. A corporate tax background with exposure to tax accounting, reporting and compliance.
10. A keen interest in technology and improving processes using technology. OneSource and Power BI experience would be an advantage although not essential.
11. Asset management or financial services experience is an advantage, though not essential.

They will be a collaborative team player with a proactive and flexible approach to work. They should be able to demonstrate strong attention to detail and the ability to deliver work with a high degree of accuracy. You will be confident working independently but also able to build relationships both within the firm and with external service providers. Proven organisational skills are essential as the role will involve managing multiple deadlines. In addition, a commitment to driving technological efficiencies and enhancing existing processes will be essential.
