Nightingale House Hospice provides specialist palliative care services free of charge to patients and families across Wrexham, Flintshire, East Denbighshire, Barmouth and border towns including Oswestry and Whitchurch. The Hospice costs £5.6m per year to run, with only 20% of funding provided by the government. We rely on community donations and fundraising, and more than 400 volunteers contribute to the Hospice. This year Nightingale House Hospice is celebrating 30 years of compassionate care.

The successful candidate will be joining a friendly and passionate team that works in our newly developed state-of-the-art Inpatient Unit.


Main duties of the job

To provide evidence-based care directly to patients and their families, maintaining high standards in collaboration with registered nursing staff and enhancing patient well-being and experience at Nightingale House Hospice.

To work within the hospice policies and procedures, maintaining safety of patients and staff.

To assess patients’ condition and needs and report findings to registered nursing staff.

To ensure adequate stocks of consumables and that equipment within the department is clean and in good working order.

To assist in the smooth running of the ward by promoting a clean and healthy environment.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Clinical

Provide direct nursing care to patients, working independently when appropriate or in partnership with registered nurses when patient needs demand this.

Work with the multi-disciplinary team to maintain a holistic approach to patient care, reporting concerns as necessary.

Collaborate with the team to support families, reporting any difficulties to registered nursing staff.

Observe and report accurately on patients’ general condition and ensure information is communicated and recorded in patient records in line with legal and professional requirements.

Maintain a high standard of nursing care.

Help ensure a safe working environment including knowledge of policies (fire and health and safety) and ensure equipment is in good working order. Report accidents to the Senior Nurse.

Demonstrate communication skills appropriate to your role with patients and families.

Assist with maintaining general cleanliness of the unit and any housekeeping as required, including storage of equipment and furnishings in good repair.

Undertake clinical observations as required and be competent to identify results outside normal limits.

Assist and support volunteers in their role and delegate where appropriate.

Perform designated nursing tasks as agreed with Ward Manager or nurse in charge, depending on competencies and training.

Maintain ward stock and complete weekly orders if designated for that week.

Be holder of a Food Handling Certificate or be prepared to attend the course (face to face or online).

Assist with ordering patient meals as directed by nursing staff and assist in serving meals, drinks and supplements; prepare allowed foods as needed.

Ensure ward kitchen area is kept clean, tidy and stocked, with fridge temperatures monitored daily.

Provide mentorship to new staff members and support volunteers.

Plan own workload in collaboration with registered nurses and demonstrate positive and professional behaviours at all times.

Clinical Governance

Act as a mentor to CQF trainees to support and enhance progress. Ensure practice aligns with health and safety, infection prevention and control measures.

Education and Development

Attend mandatory and non-mandatory in-service training as indicated by service needs and personal development. Have a written appraisal by line manager at least annually, with review of objectives.

Research and Development

Undertake surveys or audits as necessary to support the audit process within the clinical area.

General Requirements

Competence

You are responsible for acting within your competence. If you have doubts about competence during duties, speak to your line manager/supervisor.

It is a standard element of the role to actively manage risk, including risk assessment, taking appropriate action and reporting incidents, near misses and hazards. You must adhere to Nightingale House Hospice Policies, Procedures, Protocols and Guidelines at all times.

Health and Safety Requirements of the Hospice

All employees share a duty of care for personal safety and the safety of others. You must cooperate with management to meet legal duties and report hazardous situations or defective equipment.

Data Protection and Confidentiality

You must treat all information as confidential in line with data protection legislation and organisational policy. Breaches are disciplinary offences liable to dismissal and/or prosecution. This duty continues after leaving the organisation.

Records Management

You are legally responsible for all records you gather or use, including patient and staff records, whether paper-based or digital. If unsure about records management, consult the IG Lead.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Good knowledge of anatomy and physiology
* NVQ Level 2 in a health/social care related subject or equivalent experience/qualifications

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a DBS check.

£13.74 per hour; 26% enhancement for weekend working and 15% for nights.
