Senior Healthcare Support Worker – North Bristol NHS Trust
Job Overview
Our Breast Care Centre at North Bristol Trust are looking for a dynamic, ambitious and motivated Senior Healthcare Support Worker to join the team. The SHCSW is a core member of the team delivering direct care to patients and supporting registered practitioners to deliver high quality, compassionate health care to people in accordance with assessed needs and a care plan.

Please note, this role does not currently meet the minimum £25,000 salary threshold required for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, effective from 9th April 2025. Although higher pay points may be available depending on relevant NHS experience, most new appointments commence at the lower band, which falls below this threshold.
Responsibilities
* Deliver high quality, compassionate and evidence based care to women attending the breast care clinic
* Support patients to meet personal care needs
* Chaperone patients
* Manage and support patients on care flow
* Coordinate the clinics, answering telephone queries and escalating appropriately
* Prepare and support patients for various breast procedures
* Prepare to remove wound drains and carry out basic wound dressings after training and assessment
* Carry out procedures using the ANTT (Aseptic Non‑Touch Technique)
* Provide physical and psychological support to patients
* Demonstrate working within and communicating effectively to a wider multi‑disciplinary team
* Plan and deliver safe and effective care to patients
Nursing Care
* Obtain consent prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policies
* Carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal / no supervision, including blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation levels, body temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate, glucose monitoring, collection and testing of urine / faecal / sputum samples and wound swabs, ensuring high‑quality patient care
* Participate in patient assessment, providing high quality holistic patient care and escalating concerns about patients to other clinical staff
* Practice safe standards of care to patients following Trust guidelines and policies
* Maintain the work environment in line with Trust infection control and patient safety policies
* Develop the skills to actively facilitate self‑care and independence with patients
* Promote health education specific to the clinical area and in line with national and local policies
* Maintain accurate records relating to communication with patients, relatives, and members of the multi‑disciplinary team regarding all aspects of care, demonstrating a range of appropriate communication skills
* Ensure equipment and stores are well maintained, taking appropriate action if equipment is faulty
* Work effectively as part of a team
Education / Training / Qualifications
Essential criteria:
* Level 3 (SCQF – 6): City and Guilds 3, NVQ 3, BTEC National Diploma or equivalent experience
* GCSE grade A‑C (grade 4 and above) in English
* GCSE grade A‑C (grade 4 and above) in Maths
* Completion of Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (maps to the Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Healthcare Support Worker) or equivalent experience (minimum 12 months)
* Completion of the Care Certificate
Desirable criteria:
* Completion of venepuncture and physiological measurements competencies
Work Experience
Essential criteria:
* At least 12 months experience of working in a health or social care setting
* Prior experience as a support worker
* Evidence of ability to work as a member of a team
* Good time management skills and prioritising work
Desirable criteria:
* Experience working in an outpatient setting
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Essential criteria:
* Effective and appropriate communication skills both written and verbal
* Ability to complete appropriate documentation accurately
* IT skills, basic word, Email, keyboard skills
* Demonstrate an awareness of healthcare work and policies and procedures
* Ability to work with minimum supervision to a high standard
