Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Behaviour and Attendance

Contract: 32.5 hours per week

Maplewell Hall School is a specialist provision for children and young people with communication and interaction needs. We are proud of our inclusive ethos, strong safeguarding culture and commitment to preparing pupils for adulthood with confidence, resilience and ambition.

Our work is underpinned by high expectations, strong relationships and a belief that behaviour, attendance and safeguarding are fundamental to pupils’ success and staff wellbeing.

We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Behaviour and Attendance to join our Strategic Leadership Team.

The Role

This is a key whole school leadership role with strategic responsibility for behaviour, attendance, inclusion and school culture.

The successful candidate will provide visible, values driven leadership to ensure:

•Calm, consistent and inclusive behaviour systems
•Strong attendance and engagement
•Staff feel supported, safe and confident
•Pupils are ready to learn and succeed

You will work closely with the Headteacher, Deputy Headteachers, DSL team and wider leaders to ensure behaviour and attendance systems are robust, equitable and consistently applied.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

•Lead and embed a whole school approach to behaviour and attendance aligned with the school’s vision and values.
•Contribute to the School Improvement Plan with specific responsibility for behaviour, attendance and pupil engagement.
•Review, develop and implement behaviour and attendance policies and systems.
•Act as a visible senior leader, modelling calm, consistent and restorative practice.

Behaviour, Inclusion and Safeguarding

•Ensure high standards of behaviour across the school through prevention, early intervention and effective response.
•Lead inclusive practice that recognises pupils’ needs while maintaining clear expectations and accountability.
•Work closely with the DSL team to ensure behaviour, attendance and safeguarding are aligned.
•Support staff following incidents, prioritising staff wellbeing and safety.

Attendance and Engagement

•Lead whole school strategies to improve attendance and punctuality.
•Monitor attendance data, identify patterns and ensure timely intervention.
•Work with families, external agencies and the local authority to improve attendance outcomes.
•Ensure attendance is recognised as a safeguarding and achievement priority.

Staff Leadership and Development

•Support, coach and challenge staff to ensure consistent behaviour practice.
•Lead and contribute to high quality CPD related to behaviour, attendance and inclusion.
•Line manages relevant staff and contribute to performance management.
•Promote a culture of shared responsibility, professionalism and high expectations.

Partnership Working

•Build strong, professional relationships with parents and carers, including in challenging circumstances.
•Work effectively with external agencies, including social care, health and the local authority.
•Represent the school confidently and professionally in multiagency contexts.

Safeguarding

•Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (Keeping Children Safe in Education).
•Share safeguarding concerns immediately with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
•Promote the safeguarding and welfare of all pupils at Maplewell Hall School.
