Offer description

A well-regarded and inclusive 11–18 secondary school in Hereford is seeking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic Teacher of English to join its successful English department. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity to work in a school known for its strong community ethos, calm learning environment and consistent academic progress. The school has built a reputation for high standards in literacy and communication, with English playing a central role in the wider curriculum. This role would suit an English teacher who values thoughtful teaching, strong routines and the opportunity to make a genuine impact on students’ confidence and outcomes. The Role You will teach English across Key Stages 3–5, depending on experience, delivering a curriculum that balances academic rigour with creativity and accessibility. The department follows a carefully sequenced programme that develops reading, writing and spoken language progressively across year groups. At Key Stage 3, students engage with a broad range of texts, including modern fiction, non-fiction and poetry, with a strong focus on vocabulary development, sentence structure and analytical thinking. Lessons are designed to build confidence early and establish clear expectations around written and verbal communication. At GCSE, the department places emphasis on secure exam technique alongside genuine understanding of language and literature. Students are supported through structured modelling, regular retrieval practice and consistent feedback, leading to strong engagement and improving outcomes. At A-Level, English is a popular subject. Students benefit from discussion-led lessons, independent reading and close academic support, allowing teachers to explore texts in depth and encourage critical debate. The English Department The English department is a stable and collaborative team with a shared commitment to high-quality teaching and professional support. Schemes of work are well established and centrally resourced, allowing teachers to focus on delivery rather than excessive planning. Department meetings focus on curriculum quality, assessment and pedagogy rather than administration. There is a strong culture of sharing ideas, resources and best practice, making this a welcoming environment for both experienced teachers and those earlier in their career. Enrichment opportunities such as reading clubs, creative writing activities and theatre visits are embedded into the department’s work and are well supported by leadership. The School This Good-rated secondary school serves a mixed local community and is known for its calm, purposeful classrooms and strong pastoral care. Behaviour systems are clear and consistently applied, creating a positive teaching environment where learning can flourish. Leadership is visible, approachable and supportive. Staff are trusted as professionals and encouraged to focus on effective teaching rather than unnecessary bureaucracy. Wellbeing is taken seriously, with workload policies reviewed regularly. Pastoral support is well structured, with tutors, heads of year and pastoral teams working closely together to support both students and staff. Facilities and Learning Environment The English department is based in a dedicated area of the school, with classrooms designed to support discussion, modelling and extended writing. Teaching spaces are well maintained and equipped with interactive screens and visualisers. The school library is actively used by students across all key stages and supports independent reading, research and A-Level study. Shared digital resources are easily accessible, supporting efficient planning and consistency across the department. Professional Development Professional development is a clear priority. Teachers benefit from: Regular subject-specific CPD Opportunities to contribute to curriculum development Support for progression into pastoral or subject leadership roles A culture of coaching and reflective practice The school supports long-term career development and has a strong record of retaining staff. The Ideal Candidate You will: Hold QTS or equivalent Have strong subject knowledge in English Be confident teaching across KS3 and KS4 (KS5 desirable) Value consistency, inclusion and high expectations Be reflective, organised and collaborative Why Apply? Supportive and well-established English department Calm classrooms and positive student behaviour Realistic workload and strong pastoral systems Opportunity to make a genuine impact in a community-focused school If you’re an English Teacher seeking a January 2026 role in a school that values professionalism, consistency and high-quality teaching, we would be delighted to receive your CV.
