Overview

Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching hospital based on two sites in the heart of London, caring for people with a range of illnesses. We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Matron for Emergency Medicine and Integrated Care to join our team on the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site at 369 Fulham Road, London. You will work alongside the Divisional Director of Nursing and senior management teams to improve care and the patient experience for patients and families.

The post holder will lead and be responsible for delivering high quality care and patient experience in their area through proactive clinical and professional leadership to nursing and midwifery staff at all levels. The role emphasises safe, evidence-based, compassionate care and effective workforce management.

We welcome applications for flexible working arrangements where possible to support staff and patient needs. Employment is subject to a six-month probationary period. Responsibilities

Clinical

* To work in clinical practice providing clinical expertise and leadership to the team.
* To undertake daily ward rounds and obtain real time patient feedback; liaise with the person in charge of the ward/department to assess cleanliness and clinical standards.
* To ensure the provision of safe, high quality care and treatment for all patients delivered within agreed standards, protocols and guidelines.
* To monitor performance across wards and departments against agreed nursing/midwifery and clinical indicators and plan improvement with Ward and Department leads.
* To ensure a robust approach to clinical incident reporting, investigation and action planning.
* To ensure policies and procedures related to infection prevention and control are followed and practice is audited.
* To ensure medicines management policies are followed and practice is audited.
* To ensure environmental cleaning standards are maintained and to take corrective action if standards fall below defined levels.
* To maintain clinical documentation to Trust guidelines and participate in developing clinical data systems.
* To identify opportunities for team development to meet evolving patient and service needs.
* To ensure clinical representation in appropriate Trust forums and disseminate information across the service.

Management

* To provide professional leadership and line management to senior nursing staff including ward and departmental Sisters/Charge Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Advanced Practitioners.
* To ensure annual appraisals and up-to-date personal development plans for direct reports.
* To develop and lead recruitment and retention strategies for Nursing and Support Workers in collaboration with the Divisional HR Team and ward/department leads.
* To participate in recruitment to meet service needs and verify staff registration and status.
* To manage performance, capability and conduct issues in line with Trust policies, with HR involvement as needed.
* To support and advise direct reports on conflict, performance, and disciplinary issues and undertake HR investigations as required.
* To promote equality of opportunity and conduct equality impact assessments on policy/service changes.
* To enable consultation and ownership among Ward and Departmental Leads and ensure their views are represented.
* To develop local policies, protocols and guidelines reflecting best practice and inform staff of changes.
* To participate in business planning for the Division/Directorate and lead related practice/service developments across the Trust.
* To lead the review and redesign of pathways and services to meet changing patient needs while optimising resources.
* To seek patient and family input and review patient satisfaction surveys to influence service development.
* To enable multi-professional and multi-agency collaboration centred on patient needs.
* To oversee budget management for pay and non-pay, ensuring efficient staffing and supplies use to balance the budget.
* To review rosters for effective staffing and ensure approval in line with roster policy.
* To participate in the Trust-wide Establishment Review process, ensuring ward areas comply and timely information is provided.
* To lead recruitment and retention efforts for Nursing and Support Workers in collaboration with HR and ward leads.
* To participate in staff recruitment and maintain staff records and nurse registration status.
* To manage performance and conduct issues and support coaching for teams, including HR investigations as required.
* To promote equality and conduct equality impact assessments on policy changes.
* To enable consultation and ensure staff are informed of organisational changes and that their views are represented.
* To ensure local policies and guidelines are up-to-date and staff are informed of changes.
* To participate in division/business planning and lead service developments across the Trust.
* To review patient pathways and services to meet changing needs while optimising resources.
* To establish patient and family views and promote patient and public involvement in service evaluation and improvement.
* To enable multi-professional collaboration to support service development centered on patient needs.
* To oversee ward and departmental leads in budget management and resource use to achieve a balanced budget.
* To review rosters and ensure alignment with policy and effective staffing usage.
* To participate in the Establishment Review process and ensure timely information is available per National Quality Board requirements.

Educational

* To ensure all new staff attend Trust induction and mandatory training updates.
* To ensure robust orientation and induction documentation for new staff in local areas.
* To conduct an annual training needs analysis and plan local training initiatives and external post-registration training provision.
* To monitor training activity against the annual post-registration educational contract within the Directorate/area.
* To support in-house education and training programmes and ensure educational needs of students are met.
* To promote clinical supervision, preceptorship and mentoring within the team.
* To foster opportunities for nursing/midwifery and multi-professional research within the Directorate/area.

Professional Development

* To be appraised at least annually and contribute to personal development planning.
* To maintain leadership, clinical competence and professional awareness in line with CPD and revalidation requirements.
* To engage in reflection and learning from practice to maintain and develop competence.
