We deliver clinical trials of new tests and treatments for a range of neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. We foster the rapid translation of research into practice to bring scientific progress out of the lab and into the community. As our new Director of Laboratory Services, reporting directly to the CEO, you will lead on the provision of scientific services, in-house and commercial, to support clinical trials in diagnosis and prognosis, therapeutic monitoring and drug development and validation, and biobanking for longitudinal studies. SBS activity is currently focussed on the UK market, but at Directorial Level, the successful candidate will be expected to be working across our services globally as they develop. Our core laboratory facility is at the University of St Andrews incubator site on their Eden Campus at Guardbridge. Some of what you’ll be responsible for: Ensuring the timely provision of an analytical and interpretative service for blood and CSF biomarkers for the identification, monitoring and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of neurodegenerative diseases. Scaling up and leading the provision of scientific services that enable investigations to be carried out accurately, safely, and in a timely manner. Ensuring the quality of outputs through the establishment of rigorous internal and external quality assurance procedures and validation checks. Developing, implementing and maintaining a Quality Management System (QMS), codes of practice, Standard Operating Procedures, systems and records to meet the quality standards laid down by UKAS and other regulatory bodies. Risk Management for all aspects of laboratory activity and the implementation of control measures to mitigate risks to participant care. Ensuring Laboratory Information Systems can provide adequate information for management and audit purposes. Managing the performance and development of the laboratory teams. Ensuring the robustness of Health and Safety documentation, implementation and monitoring within the laboratory. Supporting the CEO and Senior Leadership Team of Scottish Brain Sciences with strategic developments of our laboratory services. The skills, experience, and qualifications you’ll bring: Expertise in developing and evaluating biomarkers for the diagnosis of dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Deep knowledge of UKAS, GLP, and other global laboratory regulatory landscapes. Expertise in sample biobanking, lab infrastructure, and digital system integration. Strategic thinker and inspiring leader with strong change-management skills. Strong organisational skills. Able to work independently, and as part of a team. Professional demeanour and ethical integrity. Advanced degree (MSc, PhD, strongly preferred) in biochemistry or other related biological sciences. Significant experience in clinical labs, biotech or pharma, with at least 5 years in leadership roles. Even better if you have: Registration with Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) or Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). GCP certification. Experience working in commercial laboratories.
