Job Purpose / Overview

As an Aeronautical Navigation (NAV) Subject Matter Expert, you will work as a member of an expert technical team providing system design, development and solutions in support and sustainment of radio navigation services and systems. You will provide technical responsibility for an Emergency Position Fixing display system and the associated network of Aeronautical Radio Direction Finders (DF), and act as an expert for En-Route Aeronautical Radio Navigation Beacons and related systems. You will contribute to documentation, regulatory compliance and transformation activities. You will operate under the guidance of the Navigation Domain Leadership, with responsibilities agreed on a system-by-system basis.


Responsibilities

* Serve as a primary technical expert for assigned system(s), supporting operational assurance and system understanding.
* Maintain and update system documentation including Work Instructions, Security Risk Assessments (SRAs), System Architecture Documents (SADs), and Technical Files; also maintain operational support environments.
* Support regulatory documentation and safety assurance artefacts to ensure compliance.
* Contribute to the analysis and resolution of PTRs, liaising with operational units and implementing changes to in-service systems.
* Provide system-specific input to transformation initiatives and asset change projects.
* Collaborate with Domain Leadership, Project Managers, Engineering Leads, and other SMEs to ensure informed decision-making.
* Stay informed of industry trends and technology developments to identify opportunities for improvement.


Autonomy and Scope

* Operate with autonomy in system-specific matters, delivering agreed outputs and maintaining documentation and assurance artefacts.
* Provide input to change and transformation projects, ensuring system-specific considerations are addressed.
* Interface with internal stakeholders and relevant external suppliers or regulators on system-specific issues.
* Assist in defining and refining design envelopes for in-service systems.


Essential Skills and Experience

* Higher National Certificate in an Engineering or Information Technology discipline or equivalent structured technical training (e.g. apprenticeship recognized by a professional body). Experience in systems engineering or technical support roles, ideally within safety‑critical or real‑time environments.
* Strong understanding of the assigned system(s), operational context, and familiarity with relevant technical standards and assurance processes.
* Strong problem‑solving ability, understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle, effective communication skills and attention to detail, aligning with SFIA Systems Design Level 3.


Technical Requirements

* Knowledge of Linux-based operating systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora) and client/server IT network infrastructures.
* Knowledge of radio theory, propagation principles, ICAO Performance‑Based Navigation (PBN), and ICAO‑standard navigation aids, supporting Air Traffic Management operations.
