Overview
Esther Ward is a 24 bedded multi specialty ward comprising 8 side rooms and 4 bays. We look after a range of patients within the following specialities: ENT, Head and Neck, Thoracic, Oncology and Haematology. We care for patients undergoing complex surgical procedures including those with altered airways such as tracheostomies and laryngectomies. We are a friendly, diverse and dynamic team that promotes best practice and clinical excellence.
We are looking to employ a hardworking, self-motivated individual with extended skills and knowledge such as venepuncture and cannulation, medication administration including enteral and intravenous routes, blood transfusion administration, wound dressings using aseptic technique and altered airway management. This role provides opportunities to develop additional clinical skills and personal development while contributing to high standards of care on Esther Ward. You will work with the wider multi-disciplinary team and support junior colleagues such as nursing assistants and student nurses. Main duties
The clinical environment offers the opportunity to learn and practice a wide range of skills across a varied caseload with support from an experienced multi-specialty nursing team. The ward provides an internal specific competency programme, 5 study days per year and a link role with access to additional study days and learning opportunities. The senior nursing team are supportive and encourage development of nursing and leadership skills. The ward aligns with Trust objectives and standards of care, with a focus on improving patient experience and maintaining high standards; patient feedback is excellent and staff are proud of the care delivered. Job responsibilities
* Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty while working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualized direct patient care.
* Be wholly accountable for practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and maintain and improve knowledge and competence.
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers and families regarding disease treatment and management.
* Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination and diagnostic investigations.
* Undertake prescribed physical observations (blood pressure, temperature, respirations, blood sugars, urinalysis, weight and height, drain monitoring with reporting of exceptions).
* Administer prescribed medications via oral, enteral and IV routes including transfusion of blood and blood products.
* Assess and recognise emergencies in the specialty, interpret information and take appropriate action, and lead others to do the same.
* Work with the multidisciplinary team to determine treatments and nursing priorities.
* Provide safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced clinical skills and perform specialist nursing procedures relevant to the area.
* Deliver evidenced-based interventions including enteral feeding line care, IV line care, complex dressings and wound management, and pre/post-operative care relevant to specialties.
Person Specification
Values and behaviour: Essential – values and behaviours in line with Trust values.
Experience: Essential – intravenous administrations; experience of coordinating a shift. Desirable – previous experience in other nursing fields; evidence of mentoring (SSSPA).
Skills: Essential – able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care; ability to administer prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products; excellent written and verbal communication skills. Desirable – altered airway management.
Education/Qualifications: Essential – RN1/RN2/RN12 on the NMC register and evidence of continuing professional development.
