Overview
We wish to appoint a highly motivated and committed English teacher to teach at all key stages. The post is for a temporary maternity cover and will end when the post holder returns to duties. It is required as soon as possible.
Applications are welcome from newly qualified and more experienced teachers. The English Department at Trinity School is friendly, supportive and always strives to be the best it can be. The curriculum is a work in progress, with innovative changes to KS3 this year and plans to further develop next year. Your voice and ideas will be very welcome in these decisions.
Key Stage 3
Last year a shift from a KS3 curriculum that explicitly teaches GCSE to a knowledge‑rich curriculum prioritising conceptual understanding has been made. We are invested in making our students literate, both literally and culturally. The KS3 team has undertaken extensive research to provide a diet of complex and challenging texts and a journey through time to contextualise any text. Year 7 covers early story writing, an introduction to poetry and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Year 8 studies A Christmas Carol and various crime and mystery short stories. Year 9 draws on science fiction, stories from other cultures and Romeo and Juliet. Opportunities for explicit teaching of grammar, context, metaphor and story structure are integrated throughout.
Key Stage 4
Year 10 and Year 11 are taught in sets according to ability. Students prepare for English Language and Literature GCSEs of the AQA specification. Staff work with a range of sets, developing their CPD. For example, a teacher may have a lower set in Year 11 and a top set in Year 10. We are considering new methods to invigorate essay structures to provide students with the best opportunities in the exam and to integrate foundational KS3 skills into KS4.
Key Stage 5
Trinity offers around 80 students studying English at Sixth‑Form level. Courses include AQA English Language, AQA English Literature ("A" syllabus) and Media Studies at A level, recently moved to EDUQAS for the latter.
