We are recruiting an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join a leading UK heavy-engineering operation. Working within a large-scale steel processing facility, you’ll play a key role in maintaining and repairing critical production machinery — from slitting and decoiling lines to pickling, coil recovery, and other high-value heavy plant equipment.
This is a hands-on role in a demanding industrial environment where no two days are the same, and your skills will directly impact productivity and plant uptime.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintain and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems across multiple heavy-engineering lines
2. Carry out welding, fabrication, and oxygen/acetylene cutting to high safety standards
3. Undertake bench fitting, mechanical assembly, and operate forklifts, cherry pickers, and overhead cranes
4. Provide rapid breakdown response and planned preventive maintenance support
5. Conduct basic electrical fault-finding (where qualified)
6. Work effectively within a 3-shift rotation, including weekend cover as required
7. Ensure strict compliance with H&S procedures and PPE requirements
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
8. Strong, recent UK-based heavy engineering maintenance experience
9. Completed mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent (City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3)
10. Proven skills in hydraulics, pneumatics, welding, fabrication, and bench fitting
11. Certification to operate forklifts, cherry pickers, and overhead cranes
12. Flexibility to work shift patterns and occasional weekends
13. Own set of hand tools and ability to pass pre-start drug & alcohol screening
Desirable:
14. Experience working on slitting/ decoiling machinery
15. Basic electrical qualification or practical fault-finding skills
