The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Environmental Consultant to join our Consulting Sustainable Solutions team.
Highways, formerly Highways England, have named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme that Highways has ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for the next 5 years.
The Role
Our Environmentalists play an important part within the Highways and Designated Funds Design team, working alongside our client, Highways. As an Environmental Consultant, you will provide support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on highways drainage schemes. Responsibilities include:
* Providing guidance on best methods and practices to meet technical and project requirements.
* Keeping up to date with industry best practices and briefing junior environmental staff where appropriate.
* Liaising with clients on technical matters.
* Advising on environmental aspects of projects, including environmental assessments, ecological studies, and hazards.
* Undertaking environmental site visits, inspections, and surveys to inform project design across multiple disciplines.
* Preparing reports for statutory bodies such as the EA, Natural England, and Local Authorities regarding scoping, planning submissions, and environmental permits.
* Supporting and guiding Highways in environmental matters, including CEMP authorisation and audits, planning responses, and construction support.
* Producing technically sound deliverables for environmental commissions, complying with technical standards and client requirements.
* Checking reports, designs, calculations, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
* Overseeing junior staff actions.
* Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
* Contributing to bids and work-winning activities.
* Promoting health and safety practices within the team.
Candidate Requirements
* Developing experience in environmental consultancy, likely from an Assistant Environmental Consultant role or similar.
* Ability to produce technically sound environmental solutions that meet standards and client needs, working independently and supervising juniors.
* Experience with health, safety, and welfare project management, including relevant regulations.
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools.
* Good commercial awareness.
* Understanding of CDM regulations and risk assessments, with experience in hazard and risk management.
* Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a relevant subject.
* Practitioner Membership of IEMA (PIEMA) or equivalent.
