Interventional Pleural Fellow (StR Higher Equivalent)

Job Summary
This post will be set in the rapidly expanding respiratory department of this large teaching hospital. The fellows will be an integral part of the lung cancer team supported by five consultants, two interventional fellows, a patient navigator, specialty nurses, and an excellent administrative team. The department is developing a new system that meets the National Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway (NOLCP), with access to same‑day radiograph and CT scans, same‑day clinic and diagnostic sampling. There is a high volume of outpatient referrals and over 400 cases of lung cancer diagnosed each year. Fellows will attend NOLCP clinics, contribute to multidisciplinary meetings, 25 clinics per week, and manage bronchoscopy lists and inpatient referrals under supervision.
Main duties of the job
* Provide RCR Level 1 thoracic ultrasound certification and foundational training.
* Teach and assist in procedures for foundation doctors, core trainees and pre‑RCR Level 1 respiratory specialty trainees.
* Complete relevant BTS national audits, participate in patient recruitment for national pleural disease trials, and develop a research portfolio.
* Perform standard flexible bronchoscopy (competent), endobronchial ultrasound, pleural biopsies, lung biopsies, neck ultrasound, nodal biopsy, and indwelling catheter insertion/removal.
* Participate in teaching medical students (organisation, small‑group teaching, bedside teaching, assessment, and examination).
* Propose a special study unit for medical students in lung cancer or pleural disease.
* Support general medical experience on wards, with possible out‑of‑hours registrar support (excluding nights).
Essential requirements
* Specialty trainee in Respiratory Medicine or equivalent, nearing competence in bronchoscopy.
* RCR Level 1 thoracic ultrasound certification.
* Competent in standard flexible bronchoscopy.
* Non‑UK graduates without MRCP must provide written evidence of appropriate knowledge, training and experience.
Desirable skills
* Full driving licence or mobility.
* Level 2 RCR pleural ultrasound.
* Independent practitioner for flexible bronchoscopy.
* Some experience of endobronchial ultrasound.
* Advanced life support (ALS) certification.
* Experience in lung cancer and pleural clinics; evidence of MDT involvement.
* to obtain or having obtained a postgraduate diploma or higher in teaching.
* Holding GCP; evidence of previous engagement in research; interest or obtained MD or PhD.
Person Specification
* Current UK professional registration with General Medical Council.
* Interest and ability to develop research and audit projects.
* Exposure to teaching medical students and junior doctors.
